In a certain apartment in Devonshire, Nicholas was sitting in an armchair reading a book, his gaze occasionally falling on the mechanical clock by the fireplace. He was waiting for a visit from a dear friend, but without a doubt, his friend was late.
After a while, a knocking sound came from the door.
"Albus, rare for you to be late as well."
The owner of the apartment opened the door, greeted the old man outside with a smile. Only this former friend could knock on the door of this apartment without triggering any defensive magic.
"There were Watchers." Dumbledore explained his tardiness, "Several Muggles were controlled by the Dementor's Kiss. I took some time to deal with them."
"It seems Voldemort has indeed set his sights on the Philosopher's Stone." Nicholas sighed helplessly.
"He'll never get in, will he?" Perenelle greeted with a smile. Having lived for hundreds of years, they had seen all sorts of situations.
"Yes, he's still quite weak. Breaking through the protective magic around the Stone won't be easy." Dumbledore nodded, "However, he is a trouble."
For the Flamel couple, life hadn't been greatly affected. They rarely went outside anymore. Though the Elixir of Life kept them from dying, their bodies had grown frail with age.
A month ago, Nicholas had sensed an impending threat and hastily left France, returning to this apartment protected by the Fidelius Charm in England.
Their pursuers, however, didn't give up. They still managed to find their way to England, only to be met with a dead-end at the Fidelius Charm.
Later, Dumbledore told Nicholas that the people searching for them were likely Voldemort's followers, and Voldemort probably intended to use the Philosopher's Stone to restore his power.
This was not good news.
The Flamel couple relied on the Philosopher's Stone to produce the Elixir of Life to keep living. Once the Philosopher's Stone was taken away, their lives would come to an end.
They contacted Dumbledore, who was willing to help them resolve this predicament.
Because if Voldemort were to regain his power using the Philosopher's Stone, the entire magical world would likely never see peace again.
"However, why do you have the time to come here? I remember today is the day for the alchemy gathering." Nicholas glanced at the purple invitation letter on the fireplace, "Sela will probably be unhappy. I promised to attend the gathering last time."
"I've attended a few times before, but eventually found it uninteresting, so I stopped going." Dumbledore added three sugar cubes to his tea, "It's been a long time since new members joined."
"It seems you haven't been paying much attention to this aspect of things. Sela told me that he's found an outstanding young man, someone as excellent as you were in your youth." Nicholas seemed unconcerned about Voldemort's matter.
"I know, his name is Albert Anderson, a very promising young man, particularly skilled in ancient magical scripts." Dumbledore didn't pay much attention to Albert's affairs, but he had a deep impression of him, "He's a bit like me, often corresponding with famous wizards. Hertock suffered a great loss in front of him."
"Hertock?" Nicholas thought for a moment, then realization dawned, "I see, it's that boy!"
"You know him?" Dumbledore was surprised. Nicholas actually knew Albert.
"We met briefly at the opera house in France. Hertock consulted me about his gold card incident." Nicholas explained.
"Later, what happened between them?" Perenelle was more interested in the outcome, "Did Hertock get his gold card back?"
"Yes, they eventually reconciled." Dumbledore smiled, "Hertock helped Mr. Anderson resolve the misunderstanding."
"We understand your purpose in coming here. If you really need it, we can provide you with a Philosopher's Stone." Nicholas sighed lightly, steering the conversation back. The Philosopher's Stone was crucial to them. Once they lost it, they wouldn't take the risk.
Of course, Nicholas was well aware of his friend's concern about Voldemort. He didn't mind lending Dumbledore a Philosopher's Stone.
"This." Perenelle placed the Philosopher's Stone in front of Dumbledore.
"Is this a replica?" Dumbledore was extremely surprised because he had seen a Philosopher's Stone before, and the one before him was almost identical to the one he had seen.
"Yes, it's a failed attempt!" Nicholas grinned. "Even you wouldn't be able to tell the difference, right?" In truth, the successful creation of the Philosopher's Stone had been more of an accident. Even Nicholas couldn't replicate it again. While he could create similar stones, he couldn't achieve the effects of a true Philosopher's Stone.
"That's a clever idea." After carefully examining the stone, Dumbledore suddenly said, "However, it's not the right time yet."
"Not the right time?" Nicholas repeated, puzzled.
"Yes, not the right time." Dumbledore explained, "I need to lure Voldemort out and see what he's up to. You know, hardly anyone can exist like him, almost like a ghost, but not quite."
"From what I know, there's a case that aligns with what you're saying." Perenelle recalled past events, "According to records, the despicable Haerpo was the first Dark Wizard to create Horcruxes."
"Haerpo the Despicable?" Nicholas furrowed his brow slightly, recalling unpleasant memories.
"About two hundred years ago, we encountered him." Perenelle's voice drifted farther away, "Haerpo somehow got wind of our situation and attempted to take the Philosopher's Stone. It wasn't a pleasant experience. With the help of some friends, we managed to defeat him."
"Did Haerpo die?" Dumbledore asked.
"I don't know, perhaps." Nicholas shook his head, "Later, we never heard any news about him."
Horcruxes.
Dumbledore was naturally familiar with this mysterious and dark form of magic. The Hogwarts library housed books related to Horcruxes.
Of course, Dumbledore had no evidence to prove that Voldemort had created Horcruxes.
Later, during the years of Voldemort's disappearance, Dumbledore discovered traces of him in the Albanian forest. Various signs indicated that Voldemort had been hit by the rebounded Killing Curse but was still alive, likely due to the existence of Horcruxes.
This was not a good sign. A wizard with a Horcrux couldn't be truly killed unless all their Horcruxes were located and destroyed.
For ordinary wizards, even if they created Horcruxes, the threat wasn't significant. When their physical bodies were destroyed, they became extremely weak and ultimately lived a meager existence.
However, for a powerful wizard like Voldemort, while he might become weak temporarily, he would find various ways to regain his strength.
"What's wrong? You don't look too well." Perenelle looked at Dumbledore with concern.
"If it's really like that, then it's truly bad news." Dumbledore sighed, "Given my understanding of Voldemort, that madman likely created more than one Horcrux."
"That's impossible." Nicholas furrowed his brow, "Splitting the soul would make it highly unstable. Creating multiple Horcruxes would suggest he has lost his mind."
"Yes, Voldemort truly is a madman. Just think about the new name he gave himself."
"Leaving... death?"
