Bab 49: Chapter 49: Escape in Dark Magic Defense

The afternoon Dark Magic Defense class didn't disappoint.

Professor Bard Blod taught with wit and humor. On the first day of the class, he said to everyone:

"You may not know, but the position of Dark Magic Defense professor is cursed. No one can stay in this position for a year, and I don't think I will be an exception. Before I leave, I will teach you the knowledge you need to master."

Such a statement was truly shocking.

"Professor, can't you break the curse yourself?" Roger Davis raised his hand and asked.

"I'm afraid... not." Professor Bard Blod shook his head. "Over the past few decades, many Dark Magic Defense professors have tried, but they all undoubtedly failed. And if even Dumbledore couldn't do it, I don't think I can. One should know their limits. Well, open to page five of 'Dark Arts: A Self-Defense Guide,' class is about to begin."

Professor Bard Blod started to digress while lecturing. He was telling everyone about his adventures during his travels, like using a bloody lollipop to deal with a desperately hungry vampire.

Blod told everyone that vampires didn't actually need to drink blood; they just craved the taste of it.

"Ladies, you need to be especially careful when encountering vampires because most vampires target young girls," Blod said jokingly.

Of course, most vampires and werewolves are registered with the Ministry of Magic, but that doesn't mean there aren't any exceptions.

When talking about werewolves, Professor Bard Blod advised everyone to keep their distance.

Being bitten by a transformed werewolf would turn you into a werewolf as well. Werewolves face rejection from wizards, making it difficult to find decent jobs, and most of them end up on the wrong path.

"If you encounter a transformed werewolf outside, the first thing I would do is use the Disillusionment Charm to escape," Blod believed it's best not to get involved with a transformed werewolf because that would mean putting oneself at risk of being bitten.

Being bitten by a transformed werewolf would bring about something more cruel than death - becoming a werewolf.

"Professor Blod, what should we do if we encounter a werewolf?"

"I think it's highly unlikely for you to encounter a werewolf in your current situation. But if, unfortunately, you do encounter one, you can only try to save yourself. In densely populated areas, you can use the Locking Spell to lock doors. As magical creatures, wizards or Muggles turning into werewolves mostly lose their sanity. Lock the door and then send up red sparks to signal for help from others."

"What if we're in the wilderness or on the plains with no hiding places nearby?"

"In that case, I think all you can do is pray to Merlin," Professor Bard Blod said helplessly.

"Can't we use wands to subdue a transformed werewolf?" someone asked.

"Yes, powerful wizards can do that," Professor Bard Blod nodded. "But I will absolutely not tell you to attempt challenging a transformed werewolf. That would be an incredibly foolish idea and a sure path to self-destruction. If you're bitten by a transformed werewolf and don't receive timely treatment, you'll surely die. Even if you survive, you'll have to face something more terrifying than death."

"That means you'll become a werewolf," he repeated.

"What if we're bitten by a non-transformed werewolf?" Albert suddenly asked.

"That's a good question," Bard Blod looked at Albert and nodded. "When a human is bitten by a non-transformed werewolf, they won't be fully transformed into a werewolf, but their body will exhibit some werewolf characteristics. The bitten area is equally challenging to heal, and treating a werewolf's wound requires a mixture of silver powder and white stag venom."

Bard Blod clapped his hands, capturing the attention of the entire class. "Why not take notes of all this?"

"Remember, always stay vigilant, keep away from werewolves, and don't get bitten. That's the best way to protect yourselves."

Before the Dark Magic Defense class ended, Professor Bard Blod taught everyone two spells: how to shoot red and green sparks into the sky using their wands.

Red sparks generally symbolized danger and an urgent call for help. As for green sparks, they could represent gathering, finding a target, or other agreed-upon meanings among individuals.

As Bard Blod narrated, everyone diligently recorded the information in their books.

As for the homework for the Dark Magic Defense class, it involved practicing the two types of sparks.

Professor Bard Blod was a reliable Dark Magic Defense professor.

This was Albert's evaluation of Bard Blod. The old man was witty and humorous, deviating from the content in "Dark Arts: A Self-Defense Guide" and instead sharing his practical experiences, which proved useful.

"I wish Professor Blod would teach us some useful spells," Albert heard people complaining more than once, with a look as if they were eager to confront werewolves head-on.

They didn't even realize how well-intentioned Bard Blod was!

"Don't be too greedy. You haven't even fully mastered the Lumos Charm yet, let alone Transfiguration and the Unlocking Charm," Albert bluntly poured cold water on George. "Right now, you still need to practice how to shoot red and green sparks with your wand."

The three of them immediately deflated like frostbitten eggplants.

Yes, they still had many spells they hadn't fully learned. Even if Bard Blod taught useful spells, it would be challenging for them to master them in a short time.

This reality was cruel to the three of them, no, to most of the new students.

"If you want to learn magic, I have a copy of 'Practical Defense Magic and Its Counteractions Against Dark Magic' that I can lend to you," Albert said with a smile as they turned the corner. "I found the Iron Armor Charm in it this morning. It's a very practical book."

Upon hearing this, the three of them immediately lit up with excitement, as if they couldn't wait to start learning. The previous conversation seemed to have been forgotten.

'Practical Defense Magic and Its Counteractions Against Dark Magic' was a book that introduced defensive magic. It had colorful animated illustrations for all the counter-curses and antidotes. As Albert had said, it was a highly practical book, albeit not cheap.

The three of them couldn't take their eyes off it.

"You've learned everything from it?"

Not only Lee Jordan, even the twins looked at Albert with anticipation, seemingly planning to ask him to teach them spells in their free time.

Yes, teach themselves.

Due to the magical display Albert had shown, they all believed they could learn other spells from him.

As for self-study, it would be a bit challenging.

"How is that possible? I haven't even mastered a few spells myself," Albert replied impatiently. "And both of you, weren't you planning to learn the Unlocking Charm first?"
