"I must admit, you are the only human who has held up better," said Maximilian.
(Because if I run away, you're going to kill me. I've already fallen into the tiger's den, like it or not, I have to survive) Edna said to herself.
"How about your hand? Does it still hurt?"
"Yes, Sir. My hand is better now. Thank you for your help."
Maximillian frowned as he felt himself sinking back into those boring brown irises. It seemed that he could see a bit of a bright blue tint, but when he looked at them again, it had already disappeared.
"I heard some time ago, the younger brother of this city's Marchioness was stabbed by a maid in her residence, and that maid stole a lot of precious jewels."
Edna instantly stiffened. She averted her eyes for fear of her disguise being exposed. The man in front of her was the person she couldn't trust the most. The man could have reported her to the authorities and imprisoned her simply because he didn't want to see her anymore. Yes, for Edna, Maximillian could do anything.
"E-umm… I don't know, Sir."
"Well, of course, you don't know. It may be an incident that you have never heard of. Apart from that, the information I got is that she is a maid. A female one, not a male. And ...your are a man, am I right?"
Edna glanced at her master who was looking at her seriously. The girl then nodded nervously.
"Y-you're right, Sir."
"Ah, besides, the victim was apparently safe and sound. I don't know who the doctor that treated the man's wound is. The information I got is that the man healed perfectly without leaving a single wound."
Edna was about to swear. Of course, Uncle Jo would survive. Her father and stepmother must have had a lot of her blood stored. They used it to heal her uncle.
"Ah, but there's something most interesting I've heard. I heard that… their residence was looted and robbed by a group of unknown people. Their second daughter fell victim to it, and they were too late to save her. Therefore, yesterday, when we visited their residence, our presence was denied because they were in mourning."
Edna tried to process everything that had happened. She froze in her place upon hearing what her master had just said.
The second daughter… was it Marionette? Edna blinked a few times. Instantly, her body felt limp. She hoped what she heard was a lie. There was no way Marionette...
Her stepsister... Although her stepsister often bullied her, Lucy and Marionette were still her sisters. Marionette was her father's daughter too… Edna covered her mouth in disbelief.
Maximillian glanced at Edna's raised hand. The hand was full of bandages and wounds. He saw with his own eyes when the doctor in the clinic treated Edna's burn. Both of her hands had many white streaks. The wounds hadn't faded. It would likely be difficult to disappear. It seemed it would last until the boy died.
"You look surprised. You know them?" asked Maximillian, then took a sip of his tea.
Edna shook her head quickly. "N-no. I-I just… once accompanied the master I served before to visit their residence. I was only surprised because… Marquess Westfall is a good person. I hope… he's fine," replied Edna, who wasn't aware that Maximilian was starting to suspect her.
"Hm-hm… speaking of Marques Westfall, he doesn't seem too good. I don't know what happened, but he said the thieves took a lot of his valuables. The warehouse in the eastern part of the residence was completely empty. Is Marquess Westfall that rich?"
Edna lowered her hand. That warehouse… that was where her father kept her blood. She was the only person in the Westfall residence other than the Marquess allowed to enter that place.
As far as Edna knew, no one else knew about the warehouse. She was worried sick about her father. Her father might try to sell her off to Uncle Jo through marriage, but the man was the only family she had.
She no longer had a mother. Her father was the only person who had blood ties with her and shared her mother's memories. She now felt that leaving home was the wrong decision.
Edna shook her head. She couldn't get carried away. Perhaps she was still emotionally attached to the Westfall family, but logically this was a wise decision. After she left this kingdom, she would start a new life by selling all the jewelry she took with her when she ran away.
"Oh, you said you worked for a noble? Who was your previous master? I am looking for something that might have anything to do with the nobles in this kingdom. I want to know if your previous master is someone who might know something I'm looking for."
Edna hadn't prepared for this yet. She was stunned and confused.
"Duke … Matteo Ashryver?" Edna replied hesitantly.
She didn't know many nobles, but she knew quite a few names in this kingdom. And it was the fastest random name Edna could think of.
"Ashryver you say?"
Edna nodded.
Duke Ashryver's family was one of the families that sailed with his father to other continents. Edna didn't know what had happened on their journey, but her father said the duke died of the same disease as her mother. His body was then thrown into the ocean.
"You said Ashryver?" Maximillian asked again, making Edna nervous.
She was nervous because she didn't know if her answer was wrong or right. The Ashryver family was an aristocrat who was now only in name. Edna had heard that the duke was someone who had magical powers, but none of his descendants mastered magic.
And since the departure of Duke Ashryver, the Ashryver family had continued to lose its glory.
Maximillian squinted. Ashryver was a familiar name to his ears. He had never met any of them, but he knew the name belonged to whom. Unfortunately, he could not read the mind of the servant in front of him. So all he could do right now was ask around curiously.
"All right, Ashryver. I'll do some tracking on that name after this…" Maximillian said after putting his teacup back down.
"And, tomorrow, accompany me for shopping… Even though I still don't like you, you are quite capable as a servant. At least if you really want to be my servant, you should look neater. Not messy like a sewer rat," continued the man who then stood up, leaving Edna alone in the garden.
Edna blinked. She glanced at her master's back once again.
