Bab 13: I would have saved anyone
Declan's plan was simple: go home, lie down, and wake up to a full brainstorming session. He slid into his car and put on some music, which he knew could lift his mood even on a bad day. Good music was like medicine for his soul. The road wasn't busy, and he was beginning to feel better, with his hand on the steering wheel moving slowly and his body swaying to the music blasting from his speaker.
He wasn't going to give his problem much thought; he would let it be until he found a solution. Maybe the day wouldn't end up badly. He sighed, feeling his inner peace returning until suddenly, a woman ran onto the road, turning his peace into chaos. He immediately halted without thinking, but before he could blink, he saw a figure fly and land on the ground. Paralyzed, he stayed in the car, blinking. He waited for the truck driver to come out and help the woman, but whoever it was fled immediately.
"Fuck! Some people are a waste to humanity," he muttered under his breath.
Without knowing what he was doing, Declan opened the door of his car and rushed to the woman lying on the ground. She was bleeding and unconscious. He lifted her hand, but it immediately dropped back on the ground. He placed his ear to her chest and was relieved to find out that she was still breathing.
People had started moving closer, whispering. Some were taking pictures and videos. Declan sighed, knowing he couldn't scream at the idiots who wouldn't call for help. He immediately carried her to his car and drove to the nearest hospital, going past his normal speed limit, hoping she would still be breathing by the time he got there.
Luckily, the nearest hospital wasn't far from the location of the accident. He drove into the hospital almost hitting someone too. The moment he parked his car, he picked up the woman and ran to the emergency unit. Her dress was sleeveless, and all her hands were bruised and bleeding. He stared at her face, hoping she would open her eyes for a minute. He must have been running at his fullest speed, but it felt as if he wasn't moving from where he was. The emergency unit seemed far. The moment he got there, the nurses immediately collected her, sending him back to the reception.
"What's her name?" a nurse asked.
He groaned, losing his finger in his black hair. "I have no idea who she is. It was a hit and run," he said, turning back to leave. He had done what he could. Now, all he needed was a cold shower and the comfort of his bed.
The nurse ran in front of him, preventing him from taking another step. "Sir, you can't leave until we identify the patient."
Declan raised a brow. "What do you mean I can't leave? I only helped her. I'm busy."
The nurse nodded. "I understand, sir, but you need to stay with her."
"Are you sure you understand? If you do, you will let me leave here."
She nodded again. "Sir, you have to wait until the patient wakes up."
Declan nodded. There was no way they were going to let him leave. He sat among the others in the reception, staring at people coming and going. How did he get himself into this situation? Why couldn't he have left and minded his own business? He shook his head. He knew the answer to that. He wouldn't forgive himself if anything happened to that woman. He would always remember that he could have helped her, but he left an innocent woman to die. His conscience wouldn't be able to live with that.
Declan was beginning to feel agitated when the nurse who had insisted he stayed suddenly walked up to him. "She's awake."
Declan let out a deep breath he had no idea he was holding. "So, can I leave now?"
She smiled at him. "Don't you want to see her?"
He shook his head. "As long as she is fine, I don't want to see her."
She nodded. "But she wants to see the person who saved her."
He sighed. He didn't have time for all this. The nurse looked like she wasn't going to let him leave regardless of his reason. "Okay, just take me to her."
The nurse led the way while he followed behind silently. He glanced at everything he saw on the way, making mental notes. He was like that. He always observed everywhere he went and tried to know how he could be of help or how his business could help.
She had been moved to a regular room. The room had two beds, both of which were occupied. The other patient was also a woman with a bandaged arm. A man sat beside her bed, feeding her something. He glanced away from them, following the nurse dutifully until she stopped in front of the woman he had saved. She looked better now. Her arm had been cleaned and covered with a dressing. The nurse smiled at him and excused herself.
He stared at her. Her red hair was pulled back, and she peered at him with intense green eyes. She looked beautiful even in her injured state, and she tried smiling at him. He hadn't gotten a good look at her while saving her, but looking at her now made him realize he had done the right thing. She was a beauty. He had never met anyone with such intense green eyes that looked like she could see into his soul. His gaze moved to her nose and then her lips and he mentally shook his head. What was wrong with him? This was an injured woman whom he knew nothing about.
"Thank you for saving my life." Her voice was low and caressing, ''I appreciate you leaving your car to rescue me."
He watched her lips move before his brain finally processed the words that had left her mouth. He nodded. "It's no big deal. I would have helped anyone."
