Bab 26: Whisky Peak

Jack arrived at Whisky Peaks, a picturesque town with quaint houses, bustling markets, and cobbled streets. The town was nestled in the shadow of a towering mountain range, creating a unique landscape that blended the beauty of nature with the charm of human architecture. Despite being in the Grand Line, this island seemed to be thriving in peace and prosperity.

As he walked through the town, Jack couldn't help but notice the underlying tension in the air. There was an unspoken unease amongst the townspeople, and while they greeted each other warmly and went about their daily routines, there was a sense of something simmering just beneath the surface.

As he passed through the markets, Jack stopped by a stall selling fresh fruits and vegetables. The vendor, an older woman with a warm smile, greeted him cheerfully. "Good day, sir! Are you new to Whisky Peaks?"

Jack nodded, his face calm and his ocean-blue eyes taking in the bustling town. "Yes, I'm just passing through. I must say, this place is quite beautiful."

The woman beamed, clearly proud of her town. "Why, thank you, sir! We're quite proud of our little paradise here. Do let me know if you need any assistance during your stay."

As Jack thanked her and walked away, he couldn't help but notice the faint worry that flickered in her eyes. It was clear that the people of Whisky Peaks were on edge, and Jack was determined to find out why.

As he continued to explore the town, Jack was approached by a group of men who appeared to be town guards. Their leader, a tall, burly man with a neatly-trimmed beard, stepped forward, his eyes narrowed in suspicion. "You're not from around here, are you?"

Jack met the man's gaze, his eyes calm and unflinching. "No, I'm just passing through. I mean no harm."

The leader of the guards scrutinized Jack for a moment before nodding slowly. "Very well. Just remember that we have rules here, and we expect all visitors to follow them."

As the guards dispersed, Jack couldn't help but wonder what was causing the tension in Whisky Peaks. He decided that it was time to find a local tavern where he could gather more information.

Before entering the tavern, Jack took a moment to open a pocket of space to check on his family. They were still safely hidden away, and he would only bring them out once he was certain that the island was safe. Satisfied, he closed the pocket and entered the tavern.

Inside, the atmosphere was lively, with the patrons laughing and talking animatedly. As he approached the bar, the bartender, a middle-aged man with a thick mustache, greeted him with a nod. "What can I get you?"

Jack ordered a drink and casually leaned against the bar, his eyes scanning the room.

As Jack surveyed the room, a woman approached him with sultry, deliberate steps. She was a vision of beauty, with long, flowing auburn hair that cascaded down her back, framing her delicate face. Her full, red lips curved into a seductive smile, revealing perfect white teeth. Her eyes were a mesmerizing shade of green, filled with a mix of mystery and allure. Her figure was stunning, with curves in all the right places, accentuated by the tight, low-cut dress that hugged her body.

"Hello there," she purred, her voice a velvety purr that seemed to wrap around Jack's senses. "I couldn't help but notice that you're new in town. Care for some company?"

Jack, master of charm and acutely aware of the woman's intentions, decided to play along. He offered her a smirk, allowing a hint of playfulness to enter his ocean-blue eyes. "Well, who am I to refuse such a generous offer from a beautiful lady?"

The woman's smile widened, and she moved closer, her perfume intoxicating as she leaned in. "My name is Mary. What brings you to Whisky Peaks, handsome stranger?"

Jack allowed himself a small grin, knowing that he needed to carefully navigate this conversation to uncover her motives. "I'm just passing through, looking for a bit of adventure. My name is Jack."

Mary brushed her hand against his arm, her touch light and teasing. "Well, Jack, I might be able to show you a thing or two about adventure. But first, tell me a little more about yourself. What do you do for a living?"

Jack recognized her attempt to gather information about him and decided to turn the tables on her. He looked deeply into her eyes, his gaze filled with a magnetic intensity. "I'm a man of many talents, Mary. But what I'm truly interested in right now is learning more about you."

Mary hesitated for a moment, seemingly caught off guard by his response. She recovered quickly, her smile never wavering. "Well, I'm a simple girl who enjoys the finer things in life. But enough about me. I'm curious about your travels. What have you seen, and where are you headed?"

Jack leaned in closer, his voice low and seductive as he maintained eye contact. "I've seen many things, Mary, but none as captivating as you. As for where I'm headed…perhaps fate has brought me here to Whisky Peaks to meet you."

Mary's cheeks flushed a soft pink, and for a moment, she appeared genuinely flustered. She glanced down, her long lashes fluttering before she looked back up at him. "You're quite the charmer, Jack. But I can't help but wonder what's hiding behind that handsome facade."

With a knowing smile, Jack decided to push further, hoping to gain the upper hand in their verbal dance. "Mary, I can assure you that what you see is what you get. A man in search of adventure, excitement, and perhaps…a captivating companion to share it with. Tell me, what is it that you truly seek?"

Mary, flustered by her inability to read Jack and affected by his charm, seemed to grow increasingly agitated as their conversation continued. Her barriers were crumbling, one by one, under the weight of his compliments and piercing gaze. They continued to flirt, each testing the other's resolve, each seeking an advantage.

"You certainly have a way with words, Jack," Mary said, her voice wavering. "I haven't met someone like you in a long time."

Jack leaned in closer, his voice low and steady. "Perhaps that's a good thing, Mary. I imagine someone as captivating as you has more than her fair share of admirers."

Mary laughed softly, her eyes dancing with mirth. "You're not wrong, but most men don't hold my interest for long. You, on the other hand, are quite intriguing."

Jack offered her a subtle grin, allowing the corners of his eyes to crinkle ever so slightly. "Intriguing, huh? I'll take that as a compliment."

Their conversation continued, each word carefully chosen, each glance a calculated move in their intricate game. As the minutes ticked by, Mary's defenses seemed to weaken, and her emotions flickered across her face like a kaleidoscope of colors.

Finally, she sighed, her shoulders slumping as if she had reached the end of her rope. "Jack, you should leave this island. It's going to get chaotic soon, and I don't want you to get caught in the crossfire."

With that, she turned and darted away, her auburn hair whipping behind her like a banner. As she disappeared into the crowd, Jack noticed that dozens of pairs of eyes were now focused on him. His interaction with Mary had not gone unnoticed, and it was clear that the other patrons were evaluating him, trying to determine his intentions.

Not one to leave a woman in need stranded, Jack decided to follow Mary. He pushed his way through the crowd, his eyes scanning the room for any sign of her. He spotted her slipping out the back door and quickly pursued her, stepping out into the cool night air.
