In the wake of Baron Chignolo's tragic murder, the once-vibrant and lively city of Durazzo had fallen under a somber pall. The joyous celebrations that had marked the ill-fated marriage had given way to an atmosphere of mourning and uncertainty. 

John Collocorto, a loyal and steadfast retainer of Baron Chignolo, had been deeply affected by the loss of his lord. The memory of that fateful night haunted his every waking moment. He couldn't shake the feeling that he should have done more to protect his liege, that he should have seen through the deceit that had led to the baron's murder.
