Bab 37: Lyndon Schneider

Josh's interview at McKinsey Company went smoothly. He recruited five suitable personnel: three professional managers with relevant industry experience, one finance specialist, and one administrative secretary.

All five of them were men.

This was quite normal. Even in a modernized country like the United States before World War II, the proportion of women participating in social work was very low. They were mostly concentrated in "female-friendly" jobs such as teaching, office clerks, and service or retail.

It wasn't until the United States officially entered the war that, due to a severe shortage of male labor, many women were encouraged by the Roosevelt government to enter various industries.

However, after the end of World War II and the return of many male laborers, women lost job opportunities to some extent.

This situation did not change until the 1960s. Not just works but higher education opportunities too.

Although many public universities allowed women to attend college in the 19th century, these universities were mostly community colleges that taught simple social and vocational skills.

Name-brand schools like Harvard, Yale, and Caltech began admitting female students mostly after the 1970s.

Even schools like MIT that began admitting women early (in 1911) had extremely low admission rates.

Therefore, he could only use men unless Josh was looking for a vase.

But why did he hire a headhunter if he wanted to find a vase?

After completing the interview, Josh assigned the first task to the five people... The three professional managers were responsible for finding suitable factory sites. At the same time, the administrative secretary and finance specialist were responsible for finding suitable office buildings.

After assigning the tasks, Josh declined the invitation of the senior management of McKinsey & Company and prepared to go home.

However, as soon as he left the McKinsey building, he saw a convoy of police cars speeding past him.

At the same time, the sound of gunfire came from the lakeside district not far away.

Well, that was actually the sound of submachine guns.

Although he didn't know exactly what had happened, Josh chose to take a different route home based on the principle that it's better to be safe than sorry.

Watch the excitement? Joke, they're using submachine guns. Can you just watch that kind of excitement casually? Bullets don't have eyes.

However, according to Malphite's Law... cough cough, Murphy's Law.

The more you fear something, the more likely it is to happen.

Because he took a detour, Josh passed through a seldom-used park path, where suddenly, a person appeared before him.

Josh instinctively hit the brakes.

And because the road was narrow and he wasn't going very fast, he didn't hit the person.

But after seeing the person who had jumped out, Josh regretted hitting the brakes.

Because he was very tall, estimated to be over two meters, but that wasn't the key point. The key point was that the person was holding a gun pointed at Josh.

"Hey buddy, don't be impulsive; we can talk about anything!" Faced with the gun, Josh raised his hands very decisively. Still, in his heart, he was already prepared to take out the shotgun from the system warehouse and shoot the other person when they weren't paying attention.

"Sorry, sir, we just need a car!" The tall man motioned with his gun, indicating that Josh should get out of the car.

Hmm, he's quite polite, but that doesn't change the fact that you're going to die... but... what about you guys?

Josh was puzzled, and then a well-dressed old man with a black leather bag emerged from the bushes on the side of the road.

Wait a minute, Lyndon Schneider? Josh saw the old man's appearance and immediately remembered the morning news about the robbery.

Wow, he was really lucky.

"Excuse me, sir, but we really need a car!" Lyndon Schneider politely took off his hat and greeted Josh with a hint of apology. But the next moment, after he saw Josh's face, he was slightly stunned and said, "Young man, who is Heinze Kane to you?"

Upon hearing this name, Josh was taken aback, as it was the name of his deceased father. "You know my father?" Josh frowned.

"Oh, of course. Then you must be Josh Kane. I'm Erwin Lyndon Schneider, a friend of your father's," the old man said.

Josh couldn't help but think to himself, "Well, of course, I know you're Lyndon Schneider. We were both in the same newspaper." But since the old man could mention his father's name, what he said was likely true.

Although the old man spoke English, he had a strong Bavarian accent, and his German surname Schneider, along with his old-fashioned manner, made it evident that he was likely of German or Austrian descent.

"But I've never heard my father mention having a friend who was a criminal," Josh retorted. "And I doubt any friend would point a gun at someone's child."

"That's understandable. If I were a father, I wouldn't tell my children that I have a friend who is a criminal," the old man admitted. Unexpectedly, he did not react to Josh's sarcastic remark but instead acknowledged it generously, then turned to the big man and said, "Dix, put down your gun."

The big man obviously trusted Lyndon Schneider and immediately complied by putting down his gun.

"Son, I'm very sorry for causing you any trouble. And you've probably seen in the newspaper that we're in a difficult situation, being chased by the police. So we need to borrow your car. If the police come later, you don't have to keep our secret. Just tell the truth, and I believe the police won't give you any trouble. Also, take these things as compensation!" While apologizing, Lyndon Schneider opened his black leather bag, took out a handful of priceless diamond roughs, and handed them to Josh.

This made Josh feel somewhat embarrassed.

Even though his Lincoln Continental is quite valuable and was a gift from Margaret that holds great meaning, the handful of gems that the other party stuffed into his hands are worth enough to buy at least a dozen cars. Playing with the jewels in his hand, Josh couldn't help but ponder.

As the other party started the car, he spoke up. "I think you may need a place to hide," he said.
