Ten minutes later, Louis returned, taking a seat beside Alicia and patting her head in a soothing manner. "Maddie is sick and can't handle the pressure. Don't stress her out," he said.
Alicia knew Louis wanted her to be patient, but she couldn't help feeling angry. Madelyn was trying to break up her family, and Alicia had no intention of tolerating her. Her lips were tightly pursed, and her face was as dark as a storm cloud.
Bonnie noticed Alicia's distress and patted her shoulder, glaring at Louis and warning him, "Alicia is a young woman, just like Madelyn. You need to handle your relationship with her carefully, or else Alicia will suffer. Got it?"
Louis turned to Alicia, teasing, "Who's this little girl, looking so angry?"
Alicia rolled her eyes, unamused by his joke.
Louis hugged her gently, coaxing her with a soft voice, "Alright, don't be mad anymore."
He held her injured wrist, stroking it tenderly. "Being angry can slow down the healing process."
Bonnie joined in to comfort her, saying, "Alicia, don't be angry. If he upset you again, just let me know. I'll take care of him. It's getting late now. Go home and get some rest."
Both of them cajoled her, and Alicia couldn't hold onto her anger. She pushed Louis away gently, noticing a nurse accompanying her grandmother in the ward. "Grandma, take care of yourself. I'll come back to see you tomorrow," she said.
Bonnie smiled kindly and reminded her, "Don't forget what you promised me."
Alicia's ears turned slightly red. "OK," she replied.
She stood up, grabbed her bag, and walked out of the ward with Louis by her side.
Outside, Louis noticed Alicia's blushing ears and asked curiously, "What did you promise Grandma? Your ears are turning red."
Alicia whispered back, "Grandma asked me to have a baby with you."
Louis laughed, "Grandma is obsessed with having a grandchild. She's been urging me to have a baby since I could walk again. She's even pressured me a few times. And now she's putting the pressure on you. A few days ago, she even locked us in the old house, trying to get us to have a baby."
Alicia was lost in thought and didn't respond. She got into the elevator, then into the car, and the driver started the engine.
Louis turned to look at her with a smile on his lips but a hint of seriousness in his eyes. "Do you want to have a baby?" he asked.
Alicia thought about it carefully. "Having a baby right now is risky," she replied. "What do you think?"
Louis's eyes darkened with an unspoken meaning. "Is it that you don't want to have a baby, or is it that you don't want to have my baby?" he asked.
Alicia felt that his words were a bit ambiguous and pondered for a moment before saying, "Let's wait until we stabilize our situation. Don't you want a divorce? If we have a child and then divorce, it wouldn't be fair to the child."
Louis self-deprecatingly hooked his lips, withdrew his gaze, looked straight ahead, and said casually, "That's true."
Both of them had their own thoughts and remained silent for the rest of the ride. When they turned the corner ahead, Louis asked, "Come home with me. It's convenient for me to take care of you."
Alicia was silent for a few seconds before saying, "OK."
After getting out of the car at home, Louis took her hand and walked towards the door. Alicia looked down at the hand he was holding. They rarely held hands outside, always maintaining a polite distance in between.
Recently, however, Louis had become more intimate with her. But whenever Alicia thought about this hand, the hand that had also held Madelyn's, she felt a bit uncomfortable.
Upon entering the house, Alicia put down her bag and went to the shoe cabinet to get Louis's slippers.
He held her shoulder and prevented her from bending down, saying, "Your hand is injured. Let me do it."
He took out the slippers from the cabinet and helped her take off her shoes, gently slipping her feet into the slippers, and even carefully pulled up her socks. It used to be her serving him and doing these things, but now it was him serving her.
Louis seemed to sense her unease and said with a smile, "Husband and wife should take care of each other. You used to take care of me, and now it's my turn to take care of you."
Alicia whispered, "Thank you."
"What are you thanking me for? It's my duty." Louis changed into his slippers, carefully took off Alicia's coat, and said, "You haven't taken a shower for days, just wiped yourself at the hospital, which isn't enough. Let me help you take a bath later."
Alicia's face turned red in an instant.
Before, when they were in the hospital, he helped her wipe herself every day, which was already awkward enough. Asking him to help her take a bath again would be too embarrassing.
Louis stared at her blushing face and teased, "You're not a little girl anymore. Why do you always blush? It's been three years since we got married, and you're still so reserved."
Alicia thought of what Jaheer had said to her, to be more wild and carefree at home, otherwise, she wouldn't be able to compete with Madelyn.
In a very soft voice, she asked, "Do men not like women who are too reserved, and prefer women who are a bit wild?"
Louis couldn't help but chuckle, "Who told you that?"
"Jaheer."
Louis looked at her with interest, his lips curling up as he asked slowly, "So, are you going to be like that?"
Alicia blushed even more.
She was used to being reserved and really couldn't be wild, but she really wanted to beat Madelyn.
She had been learning to restore ancient books and paintings with her grandfather since she was a child, and her edges had long been smoothed out. She was a person who was content with a simple life and did not care about the world. But recently, for some reason, Madelyn had aroused her intense desire to win.
After considering for a moment, she lifted her foot and hooked Louis' leg, running her fingers along the gap in his shirt to stroke his abs. With big watery eyes, she asked him very seriously, "Is this how it's done?"
Louis couldn't help but burst out laughing, holding her hand that was exploring and asking, "Who taught you this?"
"I read it in a novel," she replied.
Louis examined her eyes closely and noticed that they seemed too serious for the situation. "Your eyes are wrong," he said, "they're too serious. It's like studying calculus with you when I look at them." He then pinched her waist and added, "Your body movements are too stiff, it doesn't look like flirting, but more like sparring. You need to relax, soften your waist a little, have a lazy gaze, and be more charming."
Alicia raised her eyebrows and glared at him suspiciously. "How do you know this so well?" she asked.
Louis simply chuckled and replied, "That's a secret."
"You men really do like to be promiscuous," Alicia said dejectedly before walking away towards the sofa.
Louis chuckled at her sulkiness and said, "I'm going to run the bathwater."
"Okay," Alicia replied.
After the bath was ready, Louis helped Alicia undress and she sat in the bathtub, lifting her injured left hand high to keep it dry. "You can go out," she told Louis, "I can wash myself."
But Louis insisted on scrubbing her back, picking up a pink loofah and scolding her for being so dirty. Alicia was embarrassed but couldn't help but feel a flutter in her chest as Louis flirted with her. She heard his breath becoming irregular as he scrubbed her back and realized he was getting turned on. Just as she was about to turn her head to look at him, his hand slid from her back to her waist and he hugged her from behind, kissing her earlobe and working his way down to her lips. Alicia tried to resist at first, but soon gave in to his advances.
