Maya blushed at her grandfather's high praise, but she kept her guard up.
She knew her grandfather well, he trained her to be an effective businesswoman and taught her how to use her silver tongue to get what she wanted.
"Don't worry, I don't blame you nor do I think that you are involved in whatever bullshit your cousin managed to stir," the old man said with a weary smile on his face.
"Thank you, dad," Edmond said as he calmed down and visibly relaxed.
He had been ready the entire time to defend his daughter. He wasn't about to allow his nephew to put all the blame on Maya when she was most likely the most innocent in this matter.
"Don't thank me just yet," the old man sighed. "As much as I don't want to involve you in this matter, but I believe that you two are the ones that can help me best."
Maya and Edmond both nodded as they waited for the old man to tell them what he needed exactly.
"Maya," her grandfather said as he turned to look at her. "Is there any truth to the rumors? By some miracle have you caught the eye of the President of DLR Enterprises?"
Maya bit her lower lip and fidgeted.
She didn't want to lie to her grandfather, but she worried that if she didn't he would ask her to do something she didn't want.
"Don't worry, you'll always have the option to say no," her grandfather said with a kind look in his eyes.
"He might be interested in me, but Grandpa—"
"That's amazing," the old man gasped. "Don't worry, I know you are still madly in love with that Nate Rue kid. I heard he is in town and you had lunch with him, did he treat you well?"
Maya blushed at the mention of Nate Rue and her father looked at her, shocked that his daughter had told him nothing.
"We didn't get to spend much time talking, Oliver interrupted, then I had to rush to work," Maya could feel her cheeks redden as she began to blush at the mention of Nate Rue.
"Then I hope you both get the chance to speak properly," the old man said as he nodded in hopeful approval.
"Dad!" Edmond said, scolding his own father. "You can't seriously be encouraging my daughter to return to the man that broke her heart."
Edmond shook his head and sighed.
"Maya is no longer a child, that's exactly why I'm giving her the freedom to decide if she will help with this matter," her grandfather told her father.
"I'll do what I can, grandpa," Maya said with a determined look on her face as she nodded and agreed to help. "But please, understand that I will not sleep with a man I don't love."
The old man laughed and shook his head.
"We are not that kind of family," he reminded his granddaughter. "I just want you to see if you can get a meeting with the man to clarify things."
"And what if he asks for more?" Maya asked her grandfather.
"Then refuse," the old man told her.
"Aren't you worried that he will take it out on us?" Maya asked with a concerned look in her eyes.
Her grandfather smiled and shook his head.
"We will deal with that problem when we get there, one step at a time," he told her. "Plus he doesn't strike me as that kind of person. He seems to be a respectable young man, that's why I'm not worried about sending you to speak to him."
Maya took a deep breath and nodded in agreement.
"I'll need to step out to ask a favor from a friend," she told her father and grandfather as she took her phone out of her pocket.
"Alright," the old man said as he allowed her to leave.
"Dad, if they find out about Gary—" she heard her father say as she pulled the door open.
"Then the world finds out, it's fine," Maya heard her grandfather say as she stepped out and dialed Jay's number.
"You need to deal with Harold and his son, they keep forgetting their place!" she heard her father hiss as she closed the door behind her.
What her father said was true, her uncle and cousin had crossed a line today and it wasn't the first time.
As a matter of fact, when Nate first disappeared, Gary was one of the people who quickly took advantage of her broken heart and tried to take her position in the family away from her.
She was fortunate that her grandfather and father were both logical men and Gary wasn't able to do much.
He was also the person who had ruined her reputation, if it hadn't been for Oliver her public image would never have recovered.
As much as Oliver had made stupid decisions, he still helped her way more than he had to.
It wasn't long until Jay answered the phone.
"Maya, to what do I owe the pleasure?" he teased.
"Jay, I need your help," Maya said as she searched for a more private spot in the office, walking around as a bodyguard followed her keeping close watch as always.
"Oh, with what?" He asked his friend.
"Do you know how I can contact Mr. De La Rue?" Maya asked nervously. "I know you aren't that high up at DLR but maybe you can ask his assistant or something? You seemed quite friendly with Mr. Clark."
There was a long silence at the other end of the line.
"Jay?" Maya asked as she checked if the line had been cut.
"I'm here, actually I can. I'll call you back," Jay said. "Don't worry about it Maya, I've got my own connections."
Maya relaxed and took a deep breath, relieved when her friend said he could find a way to help her. At least now there was hope that her family's dilemma could be solved.
