David's head snapped back and his brows pulled down. I put a hand on his arm when he opened his mouth, because I knew neither he nor Ash was going to be balanced about the other right now.
I cleared my throat to get both their attention off each other and back to me.
"Ash… I love Lizbeth. You know that. We were leaving you alone to give you peace."
Ash's lips twisted. "You left us hanging in the air to dry while you tore down everyone and everything that had ever been close to us. Don't give me this bullshit—tell me what you're doing and whether it involves taking me."
I looked up at David, whose eyes were thunderous at Ash's demanding tone. But to his credit, he didn't speak.
The truth was, part of the reason we'd left them alone was because we hadn't decided yet what to do. I assured David that Ash wasn't on my father's "side." But David maintained that Ash was on whichever side Ash thought would keep Ash strongest.
