When Mom walked out of my room I was left reeling. I sat there, head spinning for a long time.

All the Select were Physicists? Even Lizbeth?

Could she be right? Surely not?

I screwed my eyes shut, wracking my brain—David and I had talked about this. He'd said… he'd said the Select had already been chosen for him by his Advisors before he'd even entered the chamber that day.

But he'd chosen a handful more to hide me among them, because he wasn't supposed to take me, and he didn't want to put a target on my back.

So… was Lizbeth part of the original group that had been chosen for him, or some he'd chosen for himself? I didn't remember!

Fuck!

But I couldn't even spend time giving vent to that frustration, because the implication of this… that meant David's Advisors—at least some of them—were Physicists. They had to be, right? If they were choosing only Physicists to be in his pool of selection for a wife?
