The afternoon sun made the windows and doorways into the stable glow. The site drew my eyes and I struggled to sit still because I wanted to be out there, away from the house and everyone else.

The weather was getting hot, so Ash and I had arranged to ride earlier in the morning today, so we'd have more time.

With less than a week until we left to begin the trek to Arinel, I was walking around in a constant state of nervous anticipation—which meant I had too much energy and not enough sleep.

Ash, who'd become even more overprotective after the arrow-bolt attack than my dad, hovered nearby even when we were inside the estate house.
