One evening, Eve sat on a chair behind her desk, writing on a parchment. She dipped her quill into the black ink and started writing again. After ending her letter, she put the parchment away to let it dry and picked up one of the books on her desk.

Looking at the book brought mixed feelings, which she pushed further from her mind. She needed to learn why Sebastian had a beating heart, unlike the other vampires. Flipping the book open, she looked through the first and second pages, which only explained why it was essential for vampires to possess a dead heart.

She continued to read when she heard a pecking sound from the room, tearing her attention from the book. She looked up, turned around, and heard the sound again. It sounded like a hard object clanking against another, so she stood up from her seat to see a bird pecking on the glass.
