Bab 5: Karmic Oath and Karma
"Contract?" Fang Xue repeated, her face displaying doubt.
"That's right. Despite the beautiful and inspiring words, you are currently nothing more than an insignificant mortal. Plus, you have very little knowledge of this world, despite having the memories of your life here," said Li Qiang in an indifferent tone, attempting to conceal her earlier shock.
Although displeased with Li Qiang's words, Fang Xue knew that she was currently completely powerless. This was most evident when she heard a roar in the distance that seemed capable of instantly killing her if it were closer.
"I understand what you're saying, but there's no such thing as a free lunch in this world, especially in a world where the strong devour the weak," replied Fang Xue after a moment of thought.
"Smart... The contract is just a fancy word. It would be a heavenly oath, where you would help me find the pieces of my body and soul, and I would help you with my knowledge and aid you in reaching the top," spoke Li Qiang, her pace neither fast nor slow, ensuring Fang Xue could understand.
"I understand the benefits, but if I don't fulfill my side of the deal, what happens?" Fang Xue asked. She was already willing to accept it, but she needed to know everything. After all, knowledge is power, no matter the world you are in.
"You would die. Your physical body would be turned to dust, and your soul would be destroyed," Li Qiang replied, not annoyed by Fang Xue's doubts. On the contrary, the more cautious Fang Xue showed herself, the greater the chances of recovering her body and soul.
"Okay, I accept this oath. What do we do now?" Fang Xue replied, her eyes shining with determination.
She didn't see any problem with the contract. That Goddess would be supporting her, and it would be natural for her to reciprocate. Besides, having such an ancient being as company in this world where she was completely alone would be interesting.
"Simple. Bring your forehead close to mine, and the terms of the contract will appear in your mind. After that, just say, 'I, Fang Xue, accept the heavenly oath with Li Qiang,'" said Li Qiang, excited at the thought of someday returning to her prime.
Fang Xue approached the little rabbit and took her in her arms.
'So soft, worthy of being an ancient Goddess,' Fang Xue thought, fascinated by the softness of the little rabbit's fur.
Lost in thought, Fang Xue didn't notice the gleam of embarrassment in the little rabbit's eyes.
'Has she forgotten that I can read her mind?' Li Qiang thought, her expression turning strange. She, an ancient Goddess who reigned supreme in the universe, was being treated like a pet rabbit.
"cough, Let's continue," Li Qiang coughed, snapping Fang Xue out of her thoughts, and a slight blush appeared on Fang Xue's cheeks.
Touching the little rabbit's forehead to hers, Fang Xue saw a series of words that were strange but which she could clearly understand appearing in her mind. 'I, Fang Xue, accept the heavenly oath with Li Qiang.' Fang Xue thought, as she repeated those words with determination.
Right after she said those words, at the point where Li Qiang and Fang Xue's foreheads met, a blinding white light flashed, illuminating a radius of two thousand miles.
Noticing this light, Li Qiang was dumbfounded, and her small eyes widened in surprise.
A few seconds later, Fang Xue snapped out of her strange state and felt a mysterious force binding her soul.
'Is this the heavenly oath? Why is Li Qiang so surprised?' Fang Xue thought, looking at the surprised expression of the small rabbit in her arms.
"What happened? Did it go wrong?" Fang Xue voiced her doubts to Li Qiang.
"Well... looks like we are destined... hahaha," Li Qiang replied, averting her eyes and laughing awkwardly, not daring to look directly into Fang Xue's gray eyes.
"Explain." Fang Xue began to have a bad feeling.
"What I wanted to do with you was a heavenly oath. Even if either of us broke our part of the agreement and had our soul destroyed, depending on the strength level we reached, we could still enter the cycle of reincarnation," said Li Qiang softly.
"And why can't we enter the cycle of reincarnation now?" Fang Xue's bad feeling continued to rise.
"I think it's because we are both aimless people. Our oath has evolved into a karmic oath. Basically, should either of us die, our Karma would be extinguished," Li Qiang said, telling half-truths and omitting some information.
"Again, this Karma thing. That damn Samsara told me I have too much of this so-called Karma. What is it anyway?" asked Fang Xue, somewhat annoyed, remembering that damn God.
"Karma is something illusory and unpredictable. Even at my peak, I could not completely understand it. But basically, it's like cause and consequence. If you are a demonic cultivator who kills innocent people and commits heinous acts, you accumulate negative Karma. When you are reincarnated, this Karma would return to you in your future life," explained Li Qiang as simply as possible for Fang Xue to understand.
"In the same way, if you perform good deeds, you accumulate positive Karma throughout life. Some people, when they have a large amount of Karma in their destiny, are able to affect their own fate, consequently influencing the fate of the world."
"But erasing or extinguishing a person's Karma is basically condemning them to true death. There is no rebirth for that person," finished Li Qiang, her voice containing a slight tremor at the end. Even the ancient Goddess of Chaos fears true death.
"I understand now, but it doesn't matter. It's my current life that matters. I will either die trying or reach the top. I don't even care if I can't reincarnate," said Fang Xue indifferently, not concerned about the possibility of not entering the reincarnation cycle.
'That damn god really made up a bunch of nonsense, saying that I have too much evil Karma,' Fang Xue remembered. That was the reason that god gave her before throwing her into that hole where death was her only path.
Li Qiang was impressed by the determination in Fang Xue's words, feeling a sense of inferiority. She, the Ancient Goddess of Chaos, truly feared death.
But despite her admiration for Fang Xue, she still couldn't reveal that a Karmic Oath is only possible between... destined lovers.
