Bab 19: Revenge Served Cold
"Tsk!" Ana picked up the cup of tea and drank it with a look of disdain on her face as both women scurried out of the room.
She was sure that they were going to tell all the vassal families about her uncouth behavior and how they would come and complain to Garrison about his choice. Too bad, she was not going to leave now.
Since destiny wants her here, she was going to take revenge from all of them and her list was ready.
"So, countess," she called the woman who was still standing at the door with a cold expression on her face. "I am sure you do not leave at night." with the smirk on her face, she already knew the answer when Greta held her dress tightly and shook her head.
"Mmm, then why don't you guide me to the office of duchess? Since the post has been empty for a long time, I am sure that a lot of work would be pending." she stood up when Greta's eyes hardened.
"Pardon, my lady. But you are not the duchess yet. And we mostly handle the work, so there is nothing the lady should be worried about.
Since you are going to stay, shall I prepare dinner for you so that lady could rest early." she asked instead and with a smile on her face she added, "if you would wait for your highness, it would be a waste of effort since he did not like to eat dinner with others." who would want to wait for him! Ha! She scoffed without hiding her reaction, shocking the maid who was expecting a heartbroken look or at least some disappointment.
"It is fine, arrange my dinner with Rowan instead. But before that, I want to know what power do you hold in the palace?" Great raised her head with her nose high in the air.
"I hold all the authority, my lady. All the maids work under me and follow my command. My family has been serving the family of the duke for generations." her words were full of arrogance when Ana smiled, idly tapping the table with a carefree look on her face.
"Did that mean you have more powers than the future duchess, fiance of the duke?" Her voice was a gentle breeze of air but it felt like lightning on the woman who bit her lips.
"Of course not, my lady. I am only here to serve you." she bowed her head again to hide the hate on her face when Ana hummed.
"Then should you be refusing my command?" she asked again with the same smile as if she was asking about the taste of the tea.
"How would i! I was only worried that you would…"
"You should not be. Now shall we leave for the office of the duchess?" This time Greta could only nod and lead her but then she paused, and let her take the lead, still confused how she knew the paths of the large palace.
Ana's eyes hardened as she walked towards her fate. In her past life when she had entered the palace, she was naive! She relied on the kindness Greta showed and believed that they would be handling the work of the duchess so that she could get some time to come closer to her husband.
But they spread the rumor that the new duchess was still inefficient in dealing with the matters of the palace and the countess had to suffer a lot. She would have still endured it since she was lacking but when she took the charge and started working. She realized that funds were not matching with the accounts.
But when she brought the matter to light, everyone only disdained her. That was when she realized that the kindness of countess was a trap. She conspired and embezzled a lot of funds, hiding in cleanliness for which Ana was blamed later. They accused her of embezzling the money to give it to her father. In the end, no one gave her a chance to explain.
But now, she was prepared. Her hard work of last life would come handy now.
As the lock of the door was opened, she came out of her senses and realized how she had walked there without even paying attention as if the way was imbibed into her heart. The thought only brought a sore taste in her mouth.
The family she cared so much for, the palace she worked hard for had killed her and her family!!!
"This way, my lady." Greta smiled as she walked her in and stood behind her. She was still assured, even if the girl was shrewd, it takes a year at least to understand how the palace works and what are the duties of the duchess. How matters were handled there.
In the end, she had to come to her only. That time she would made this foolish girl realize that you were never competent enough and make Ana indebted by her kindness.
She took that with a smirk when Ana looked around. Her eyes filled with poignant memories again.
"Bring me the planned sheet for this week and last week. I want to compare it." the smile on the face of Greta widened. Now she was assured that the woman did not know anything about accounts and dealings of the palace.
She hurriedly took out the sheets and gave them to her.
"My lady, shall I leave to see the preparation of dinner if you do not mind it?" she asked with a smile when Ana nodded and waved her hands casually.
Greta walked out with a smirk on her face, "now i want to see how you are going to understand them yourself."
