It's not that the party in itself was boring...not at all. There was an actual live band playing some soft music, there were snacks and the overall mood was nice, but it just wasn't my type of scene. Maybe it was the large number of parental figures that were present. We just mostly stayed over at a large table in the corner with Miles and the three other guys from school he had invited that had decided to sacrifice themselves and turn up.
" When you invited me to a party, this is not what I pictured at all!" One of them said. Looking around the place with a hopeless look. Some time after arriving, I had taken a glass of whiskey from one of the many waiters, so had the other guys, but then out of nowhere, Miles' mum had appeared and had them all taken away.
She replaced them with orange juice! Brought us an entire pitcher of it and even had us close our eyes for a brief prayer before we drank it. I had thought she was joking but her expression had been really serious. Afterwards Miles told us that she was always like that and the wise thing to do was act right.
" When is this thing supposed to end?" One of the boys asked and Miles said sometime around midnight. We all stared at him with wide eyes, but he clarified that he was only supposed to stay up till ten so we'd be free to leave by then.
" Why hold it in the middle of the week though? Wouldn't it have been better to do this during the weekend?" Kyle inquired. Those had been my exact thoughts. People were normally busy on weekdays, it just didn't make sense to throw such a large event when the week had just began.
" They've gotta travel to Canada for a Bible conference on Friday, they'll be there till next Tuesday. God! I can't wait!" The joy on Miles face when he explained couldn't be hidden. He was grounded so he must have been desperate to get some of his freedom back. The bad news according to him however, was that his parents could access the footage of the cameras in the house on their phones, and they had told him he'd be required to check in and confirm he was home by six latest. That was just messed up if you asked me. I had once heard someone say that kids who were raised by strict and uptight parents often ended up being the most unruly. Miles was the perfect example of that. Something that was confirmed when he said he had some "snacks" in his room incase we were interested. That he could just lie and tell his parents he was taking us to the bathroom or something. When the three eagerly agreed, Kyle was about to do the same, but I said we were good before he got the chance to do so.
" You guys go ahead, we'll just hang around here for a bit, " I said. Miles looked from me to Kyle, then he slowly nodded because he understood why I had turned down the offer. The three stood up and left, and when Kyle asked me why I'd chosen to stay behind, I briefly explained that Miles wasn't talking about actual snacks. It was just a legal way of him referring to drugs.
" Seriously? What if they get high and his parents realize?"
" I'm sure they're aware of the risks. He's not that reckless, he knows the limit. "
" But still, that's just -"
" Let them be, you can't blame them, this thing is really boring. "
" It was your idea to come so don't blame me. And since when is boredom a good excuse to get high?"
" That's the perfect excuse actually. "
He glared at me and I smiled. Had he not been present I'd have definitely been tempted to tag along with the four. He was seated next to me, but there was some small space between us, so I held onto his seat and pulled him closer. He gasped at the unexpected move and held onto the table for support, but he didn't complain.
" How long till we leave? I'm starting to feel sleepy, " he told me.
I held him by his chin and angled him to look at me, then I inspected whether he looked as sleepy as he claimed, though it was more of an excuse to touch him. I wasn't going to let him get away with not telling me whatever he had promised. If he started to complain that he was tired then I'd feel guilty about questioning him once we were back home. And I was certain he knew that and was going to use it to his advantage.
" You wanna go get some fresh air? " I asked, and I didn't want for his response but rather held his hand and stood along with him. I poured him another glass of juice and handed it to him, and before we left I went and got him some of the desserts at the buffet table. I placed them all on a plate and carried it for him. He hadn't eaten and I felt like it was my fault. So it was the least I could do.
The house had a great backyard, there was a pool and some lounge chairs, and I led Kyle to one of them and had him sit down. For some reason, neither of us had worn a coat and it was cold outside.
" Wait here, " I told him before I started to walk away, but he asked me where I was going with a sort of fear and desperation. He even stood up and strode over to where I was, holding my wrist and preventing me from taking another step.
" I'm gonna get you a jacket from Miles, I'll just be a sec. "
" No, let it be. I'm okay, "
" You sure? I won't be long, "
He led me back to the lounge chair and sat down, pulling me along beside him. Then he took in a deep breath and slowly let it out.
I shifted to sit at the head of the chair, leaning against the backrest with my legs on either side of it. It gave me a perfect view of him and I liked it. He took the glass of orange juice and took a sip before placing it back down. Then he turned and looked at me, his eyes roaming over my entire form and taking in my posture, he seemed to be considering something, and my curiosity was cured when he laid on his back, with his head between my thighs and his eyes gazing at the sky.
The night in itself was peaceful, quiet in a comforting way. Even though it was cold, it was still really nice. And I liked that we were alone, the moment felt special somehow. With him, every second seemed desirable and I wanted to be stuck in it for as long as I could.
We talked comfortably for a while, I mostly just listened because his voice was comforting. He was telling me about that club which he had been invited to by that Jenna girl. He had decided to join and he claimed it was really nice. I was concerned because he had been busy enough as it was, but when I tried to relay my concerns he just assumed I was more against that Jenna than the club itself. Which was also not a lie.
" It'll be good for my college application, and it's really fun. Yesterday we had a maths showdown! Whoever could solve maths problems the fastest got a gift card. "
" Who won?"
" Don't you know who you're speaking to?"
I loved the pride and rare arrogance. He deserved to brag because he really was amazing. Before we became friends Kyle had always intimidated me, I always found myself wondering how someone the same age as me was that smart. But after we became inseparable it just became an aspect of him that I admired.
" You're such a nerd! And I love you for it, " I happily informed him, then I took a really small almond tart from the plate and fed it to him. He just slightly bit into it, then he held it between his teeth and pulled me down. The change in him when it came to us was really significant. Before, I'd have been the one to do such a thing and he would have probably pretended he couldn't even see me. But now he was the one initiating it.
" I want the whole thing, " I jokingly said, referring to the dessert. He narrowed his gaze and shook his head, unable to speak but using his eyes to say whatever was in his head. I laughed, then I grew serious and focused entirely on the tart, leaning even further down until I was about an inch away. My eyes were mostly on his lips, and I was feeling very tempted. Since his little actions in my room earlier, I was struggling to not get distracted by those type of thoughts. But he was just making things harder.
" All of it..." I repeated, whispering the words to him so that he could feel how serious I was. And when I took the tart from him he basically let me have my way. I used it as an excuse to steal a kiss. And his response was extremely encouraging. He wanted it as much as I did, maybe even more. I could tell by how he eagerly kissed me back, not letting me pull away when I wanted to. When I dipped my hand into his shirt's neckline I found his skin cold, making me wish I'd just gotten that jacket for him.
When he finally broke the kiss I chuckled, realizing that he'd somehow managed to get back the tart from me.
" It's really good, I want another, " he cutely told me, slightly parting his lips and waiting expectantly. I took another tart, rubbing my hand up and down his chest in an attempt to generate some heat on his skin. But when I was about to feed him the dessert, he shook his head and pursed his lips, turning his head to the side.
" What now?"
" I wasn't talking about that, " he told me. Then he waited for me to catch on, and I smiled when I did. Cupping his face in my hands and leaning down to kiss him again. And I once again got lost in the feel of him. Immersed in how desirable he tasted, my crazy mind even started calculating the odds of probably doing more , right there. But then someone talked and the kiss came to an end.
" May I know what's going on here?! What in God's name do you think you're doing?!"
It was Miles' mum, and for some reason I suspected she both looked and sounded more horrified than when she'd watched her son do drugs.
