Bab 141: Chapter 138

"Who is this and what the hell do you want?!" Kyle's mom asked me when she picked up. It was after I called her for the second time since she hadn't picked up the first time. My eyes widened at the words...so much for turning over a new leaf. Phone courtesy was a context she was definitely not aware of.

" Hello, it's Austin, " I informed her, and her silence was a clear sign that she probably didn't even recall who I was, so I just clarified it for her.

" Kyle's boyfriend? We met a few times, "

" Oh! Right, hey how are you? And how's Kyle? Is he okay?...Why are you calling"

" He's fine, he's at work right now. "

Her tone had changed so fast I was impressed, and I could tell she was worried, perhaps she thought I was calling to give her her bad news because why else would I call her? She asked me what was up, and after clearing my throat I momentarily changed the subject and asked her how she was. With her new job and everything. There was also some noise wherever she was, sounded like music in the background mixed with people's loud voices. I assumed she was at work, or maybe she was just walking around because from what I knew, Miami was ever lively.

" I'm good, I settled in okay. Are you with Kyle?"

" No, I left him at the store. "

" Right. And you're calling me why, exactly?"

" I just wanted to assure you that Kyle's okay, he was gonna call you but he's been so busy lately with school and work. "

" Actually he did try to call me, but I wasn't a le to pick up at the time--" She stopped explaining, and I heard her shout at someone, saying something about another round, then she went on afterwards, " I'll give him a call later on. "

" I see. "

I wanted to ask her where she was, because my mind had already figured it out. It was perhaps because of the way she sounded, like she wasn't quite herself. It was still pretty early but Stevens had made it clear that his mum didn't have any sort of restrictions when it came to drinking hours.

" Take care of him for me okay?"

" I will, don't worry. "

Was she had even worried? Had she ever been? Or was it just some big game of pretend she was putting on. Kyle had said she had promised to quit drinking, that she was going to try her best to be the model mum and she had moved because she wanted to make money for him and his future. I had assumed she was being honest since there was no reason for her to lie about such a thing, but from what I had just heard, she was no different from how she had been in Boulder. And it made me angry.

I had been pushing Kyle to forgive her and give her a chance when all along she had just been living her life without a care in the world. I knew it was wrong for me to judge and jump into conclusions like that, but it was pretty obvious that she hadn't changed. If she had actually wanted to get sober then she should have done everything to endure she achieved that goal. There was no reason for her to be out drinking at nine in the morning. And I was glad that I had called because I atleast knew what she was really upto. And I would be able to prevent Kyle from getting hurt because of her.

The race was more for fun than anything else. Trick had gotten bored and set it up out of the blue, and apparently almost everyone else had been searching for something to do so we decided to just show up and race. There was no price or anything, but I felt as if it had been too long since I raced and there was no way I was going to pass of that chance. And it did not and up being fun. Although the track we were using was some abandoned piece of land that used to be a junkyard, so there wasn't much space and we had to just go round and round the place a few times to feel like we had accomplished something. Afterwards, we were gathered somewhere just catching our breaths, and Jay brought something up. It was about a race, something called the 'Devil's Maze'. I had never even heard of it and I seemed to be the only one because everyone else had this knowing look on their faces when it was mentioned. And they began turning to each other as if to try and confirm how each person reacted.

I was still clueless, and I wondered what exactly that was and why it was named that.

" No way dude, last time my friends and I did that I ended up hiding out under some fucking car for the whole night. And my bike was confiscated, " This guy named Six said.

" So that's how you lost it! And you lied that it was getting repaired." Chase said while laughing, and suddenly everyone was talking.

" Come on! I swear It'll be fun, and the more we are the better it'll be. " Jay said and his bestie, Dave, nodded and confirmed this.

" Yeah, we found the perfect route, there are so many shortcuts and turns it's like a movie set. And we've been studying the cop's patterns so we know the perfect time and day to roll. "

The moment the cops were mentioned I decide it was time to find out what they were talking about. I asked them, and they were openly shocked to realize that I didn't know.

" You trynna tell me you've never participated in a Devil's Maze before? " Trick asked and I shrugged. They were making me more curious, despite there having been the mention of police involvement. Such things just appealed to me naturally.

" Where'd you come from? The jungle?" Jay sarcastically asked and I would have shut him up had Six not started explaining.

" It's basically like what we just did, we just ride around for fun. "

" That's one way to put it, " Chase stated, a subtle smile on his face. Then he took over the task of explaining in detail, and three minutes after he started talking I immediately knew it was a very bad idea.

But I liked bad ideas.

" So basically, we just pick out an area with the largest number of cops, whether they're traffic or just surveillance cops it doesn't matter. Then we all start off riding from different points. At maximum speed , that's why it's called a maze, they'll be confused as to who to follow and who not to. "

Upto that point, it just sounded like a bad idea that could potentially be fun. Something I would definitely consider doing because I enjoyed that sort of dangerous thrill, then he went on and I started to have some slight second thoughts.

" But sometimes they don't really care and let us be, which is why we have to make sure they follow us. "

" And how do you accomplish that?"

" We provoke them. It's surprisingly easy! Using any means you like, I'm personally a peaceful person so I just buy some fruits and veggies to throw at them. But Chase over here likes using stones instead, smashing their car's window really gets them riled up."

As much as I tried to, I couldn't stop myself from picturing things out. And I knew it was a bad idea and I had no business even considering it, but I also couldn't help but wonder how it would feel to pull something like that and not get caught. That sort of adrenaline rush was something I was desperately craving.

" Or you could just curse at them. That works too. As my past experiences have proven, cops hate to be cursed at. "

" I can confirm that, last year I called one of them a donut stuffed motherfucker and he was NOT happy!" Jay calmly stated as if he were recalling that incident.

" And if you get caught?"

" It's impossible to get caught unless you give yourself up. We look out for each other, make sure no one gets cornered by them. It's quite easy actually. "

I couldn't believe that a part of my brain was actually considering the idea. It was just wrong and there was no need for me to go looking for trouble. They even told me they had all done it a few times but I had to force myself to think rationally.

" We were thinking the seventh of next month, around nine which is when the cops do their patrol. "

" Where?"

" That street on the right of the intersection, The one with all those fancy brand label stores! "

" Whoa! That's actually really smart, I once had the same exact idea, that place is perfect!"

I watched as they all discussed how awesome it was gonna be. And I couldn't help but notice that the date they had chosen was during my midterm break. And even without discussion it was evident that they had already agreed to participate.

But it only took one single fact to make me not chip in to the conversation....I had Kyle for a boyfriend! He'd completely flip out if I ever did something like that. But still.....
