" The cops, seriously?" Max asked me as we walked through the school gate the following day. I had just told him that my mom still wasn't back, as well as what I planned on doing about it.
" It's been days. I'm really starting to worry. "
" And she won't pick your calls?"
I shook my head.
" They all go to voicemail, I stopped by Gary's garage last night and asked him whether he had seen her. "
Gary was my mom's ex boyfriend. She had quite a number of those, each one as bad as the last.
" And?" Max asked, growing more interested and more worried. He had once asked me to move in with them, that his parents wouldn't mind, but I had kindly refused the offer. I couldn't just abandon my mom, she might not be the ideal role model but she was all I had in terms of family.
" He told me that he didn't care much about what happened to her, that as well as some other things I don't want to repeat. "
To be exact, Gary had told me that my mom could rot in hell for all he cared. And that I shouldn't ever dare to bother him about her again, that they were done and he never wished to see her.
" I'll go with you then, and we can search for her afterwards. Who knows? We might get lucky. "
I thanked him, then I asked where Kira was. She was almost always with him. He claimed that he didn't know.
" She's probably looking around, hoping to "accidentally" ran into that new guy. I don't get what the big deal with this dude is, I mean, from what I've heard he's not that likeable. "
" You've seen him?" I was smiling because of the hint of jealousy I had caught in his tone, as well as the air quotes he had made around the word accidentally. But that was such a Kira thing to do. When she liked, she liked hard.
We were going up the stairs that led to the entrance.
" Nah, but Dean from History class told me. "
It was quite early, but the school was full of students that were idling around and chatting with their friends before the classes started, Max spotted Jenna as we were walking in the hallways, heading to our lockers. I immediately stayed out of sight till she passed us by. I actually admired Jenna, she was a very strong willed person who went after what she wanted, and she had asked me out on several occasions. I had accepted her offer the second time since Max had insisted I do so, but I hadn't really enjoyed my time with her and I didn't wish to ever go through anything so uncomfortable again. After she had passed by us, we proceeded to head to our lockers.
" What class do we have?" Max asked.
" Literature! You ask me every time. "
" I have a lot on my mind, I don't have time to memorize the timetable, " was his defence. I took out my books, and as I was closing my locker, the loud noises lowered to distinct mumbles. I turned around and found almost everyone focusing on the same direction.
" That must be him, " Max said, boredom in his tone. With keen eyes, I also turned to glance at the 'him' in question.
My throat became perched, my eyes saw, but my mind refused to accept what they were seeing. So did I. There were too many things trying to be felt at once and I lacked the mental capacity to be able to naturally comb through them. But the strongest emotion, the one that rose above all others was pretty clear.
Anger. It was unfiltered anger.

His head had been slightly bowed, his hand on the strap of his backpack. He looked up, and I watched as he stared at everyone that was staring at him with challenge in his eyes. As if he were silently asking them what they found so interesting. Daring them to drop their gazes because he didn't care much for them. Then he turned directly towards me. As if he had known I was there, and when I expected to see a reciprocation of the shock and disbelief, all I saw was a sparking intensity. He tucked his free hand into the dark jeans he had on. His look had changed completely, the all black attire not something I had ever expected to see on him. But he still looked like him even in the clothes, he held my gaze with his grey one. Even from the distance I had a clear mental picture of what those grey eyes looked like, I knew better than anyone how he used them to communicate. I had been skilled when it came to reading and pulling the truth from them.
And even now, even after five years, I knew quite well what his intentions were. He wanted to walk towards me, a theory he confirmed when he took the first step towards my direction. And when he was about to take another I stepped back. This was literally my worst nightmare come to life, of all the bad things that could have happened, this topped the list.
He wasn't supposed to be there, he wasn't supposed to pop back into my life after I had managed to actually get one.
He stopped in realizing I was moving away.
" Kyle?" Max asked, I imagined him staring at me all weird. Wondering what was up with me. I wanted to look at him but somehow, I couldn't pull my eyes away from the boy standing a few feet away.
I swallowed, then I stepped back to my locker and quickly locked it, my instincts warning me that he was coming closer, I could somehow feel his presence approach.
" See you in class, " I quickly told Max before I walked away from there. I took a number of turns, trying to find somewhere I could be alone. I stumbled into an empty classroom and locked the door behind me, then I placed my heart on my chest and tried to still the nonstop pounding.
It was actually him, there was no doubt about that. Despite the time that had passed, I could still recognize him.
It really was Austin O'Grady!
I inwardly cursed.
