Bab 3: Unusual Pikachu
"Pi… ka… pi…"
The unusual noise, or perhaps it was a song, suddenly made Gray feel depressed, as if all the hope in the world had vanished, leaving nothing but an emptiness in his heart.
Gray tried hard to get a grip on himself. Strange, why did he suddenly feel like killing himself? He suddenly stopped dead, shocked.
Whatever it was, this song left the listener feeling down. A grownup may be able to resist it, but what about a child?
"Come on, Eevee! The children are in danger!"
Gray along with Eevee ran as fast as they could in the thick of the forest, dodging the vines while steering clear of the Pokemon that lurked in the shadows. Several minutes later, the path began to steepen and some of the trees along it began to spread out.
Gray knew where Eevee was leading him. They were making their way to the Gazing Cliff, which is one of Twilight Town's most popular tourist spots.
The place was known for the beautiful view of the town that it offered. Gray used to think that if he had a girlfriend, he would take her there to stargaze. But now? Not so much anymore.
As they reached the top, the mysterious song became louder and clearer. Despite the urgency of the situation, they decided to approach cautiously and hid behind a tree to observe.
Several feet ahead, they saw a huge group of children huddled together. There were not only those who lived in the orphanage, but also the other children from the town. Gray wondered how many children from the town were here.
They all stood there in a daze. An unusual Pikachu with black coloring and glowing red eyes stood nearby, humming the eerie song. A moment later, it ceased its singing and moved in the direction of a young girl.
"Emma," Gray whispered.
It jumped to Emma's shoulder and whispered something to her ear. It hopped back to the ground and watched as Emma slowly walked toward the cliff. She stopped at the edge and looked down as if preparing to jump to her death.
Gray couldn't wait any longer. He rushed out and yelled for Emma to stop. But, it was too late. Emma made the final step and disappeared into the canyon below.
"No… Emma!!" Gary cried out, his hand reaching for where Emma had been.
His eyes were brimming with tears. Emma had died. How was he going to face the caretakers later?
Frustrated, he pounded the ground many times until his knuckles bled. Suddenly, he stopped. The Pikachu beside him was cackling hysterically, as if it were pleased by the girl's death.
Slowly, Gary turned to face it, and their eyes met. At that moment, his thoughts were focused solely on one thing: revenge.
Gray stood up slowly, his face expressionless, his heart empty. Nothing else mattered to him anymore. He just wanted to kill this Pikachu, who was responsible for Emma's death.
All of a sudden, Gray felt a stinging pain. He looked down and saw Eevee biting his hand. She let go and looked up at him reproachfully.
"Get a hold of yourself Gray! We must save the children first!" Eevee said.
"You're right," Gray replied, seeing the sense in her words. "Sorry, I got a little carried away there."
But before they could do anything else, a scream suddenly came from the cliff's direction. To everyone's surprise, Emma rose up with a peculiar blue aura surrounding her.
'How?' Gray thought.
It didn't take long for him to figure that out because Shuppet came up after. Gray was both shocked and relieved that Shuppet was there to rescue Emma from her fall.
Shuppet gently set Emma down on the ground, and then promptly passed out. Gray ran over to see if they were all right. Emma was still in a daze. He then moved on to Shuppet. It seemed she had used up all of her strength, much to his relief.
While everyone was distracted, Eevee gave a loud roar that made everyone's ears ring. This caused Pikachu to lose its control over the kids. All the children, including Emma, woke up from their trance.
At first, the children had no idea where they were, until they started looking around. They noticed the steep cliff ahead of them and voiced their concern aloud, "Where are we?"
"Emma! Take Shuppet and run!" Gray said, taking advantage of this opportunity. "I don't have time to explain. Take the kids with you too."
Hearing the urgency in Gray's voice, Emma gave a nod of her head. She took unconscious Shuppet from him and told the other kids to follow her. Gray sighed in relief as he watched them run down the hill. Pikachu was about to chase them. However, Eevee stood in its way.
"If you want to hurt them first you have to get past us," Gray said firmly. "Eevee! use Tackle!"
Eevee did what she was told to do and knocked Pikachu away. However, the Mouse Pokemon easily shrugged off the blow and got back to its feet.
It struck back with a fierce Thunderbolt, which Eevee avoided by a skin's breadth. Leaving no time to react, the rodent continued to several Thunderbolts that Eevee could barely dodge.
Eventually, Eevee gave up to exhaustion and was hit by the Thunderbolt. She lost her balance and fell backward. Despite that, she managed to get back up, albeit with much difficulty.
"Eevee!" Gray shouted, worried about her state.
Meanwhile, Pikachu began storing energy in preparation for one last strike. A dark aura enveloped the sky, which began to cloud over. Lightning began flashing in the skies, accompanied by thunderclaps. Not wasting any time, Pikachu immediately launched its devastating attack on Eevee.
Eevee could only watch as the Thunder descended upon her. Just as it was about to hit her, Gray appeared at the last second to grab her away.
Gray coughed softly and rose slowly. He turned back once the dust had subsided and saw that the terrain behind them had been completely obliterated, leaving nothing but bare soil.
He drew a deep breath, and so did Eevee. They shivered as they imagined what would happen to them if they didn't manage to evade the lightning just now.
However, it wasn't over yet.
Even though they avoided Pikachu's Thunder, their lives were still in danger. Seeing them unharmed, Pikachu simply let out a snort. Sparks flew at the tip of its tail and a yellow plasma ball took shape. In less than a second, the ball swelled to an impressive size.
With all its might, Pikachu hurled the Electro Ball at Gray. With Eevee in his arms, Gray jumped to the side, narrowly dodging it. When he got back up, he was horrified to see that Pikachu had made another Electro Ball.
For the next few minutes, Gray was forced to dodge as Pikachu continued to fire Electro Balls at him one after another. In his desperate attempt to escape, he tripped on a rock and fell, twisting his ankle.
As Gray crawled away, Pikachu stopped its attack. It was now slowly approaching, knowing that Gray could no longer run.
Seeing Pikachu getting closer, Gray looked sadly at the Eevee in his arms.
"I am sorry for kicking you the other day, Eevee. I have no excuse for my actions. All you wanted was to be my friend and yet I rejected you. I wish we could start over but it seems this is the end for me. You still have a chance to save yourself. Run away before it's too late."
"No! I will never leave you!" Eevee looked at him, tears streaming down her cheeks. All of sudden, she began to glow.
