The Zero region was a little-known area that was separated from the other regions by natural barriers. In the north, there was a glacier that was ideal for Ice-type Pokemon but difficult for humans to access.
The east and south were bordered by a mountain range that was inaccessible to all but the most experienced hikers. The only way to get here was from the west via a boat ride.
Zero was a lot smaller than other regions and mostly covered with trees. Depending on where you were, the species of trees you find may vary such as Berry trees, pines, and so on. However, in some areas, there were tall trees with canopies so thick that they barely let in any sunlight, creating dark and gloomy surroundings.
The cities scattered across the Zero region were relatively small; in fact, most of them resemble towns more than actual cities, with the exception being Lunar City, the capital.
Forest-dwelling Pokemon like Shroomish, Seedot and Caterpie were most common in the Zero region. But for reasons that no one could explain, Ghost-type Pokemon seemed to thrive here, a phenomenon that researchers are still trying to unravel.
One of the many Pokemon that typically resided in Zero was Pikachu. They were frequently spotted in places where berries were abundant. Not so much near towns and cities.
People who used to trek through the forest close to Twilight Town probably wouldn't have expected to come upon a Pikachu there. What really stood out to them though, was its unusual coloring.
Its eyes were a bright red color, and its body was completely black. Several people became ill the next day after encountering it, and they only recovered after a few days of rest. Despite that, people didn't give it much attention and carried on with their lives, eventually forgetting about it.
A few days ago, a lot of Pokemon had been acting strange, especially Ghost-type Pokemon. The residents of Twilight Town were used to dealing with their pranks and mischief, but recently they had gotten so out of hand that many people were scared to leave their home.
That night, Gray tossed restlessly in his bed. Again, he was having the same dream of him and the Flareon running in the dark, but this time something was different.
As he ran, the Flareon that had always been by his side suddenly vanished without a trace. Only he remained in the dark with no light.
"Flareon!" Gray yelled but there was no reply. He was terrified. The shadows were closing in on him. Then, out of the silence, he heard a growl. In the distance, he could make out a strange creature approaching him.
Afraid, Gray turned around to flee. But before he could lift his foot, the creature suddenly showed up right in front of him. Its jaw opened to expose rows of sharp teeth.
Suddenly, he woke up.
The first thing Gray saw when he opened his eyes was a Gastly, hovering above him. It was grinning menacingly and had reddish-tinged eyes that were fixed on him. He tried to move his body but couldn't. Gastly had apparently done something to weaken him.
A feeling of impending doom set in as Gray watched an energy ball build up inside Gastly's mouth. Whatever it was planning on doing, he didn't think it wouldn't end well for him.
Just as the Gastly was finishing its charge, a deafening roar broke out. This made Gastly lose its focus, which led to the energy ball collapsing in on itself. Gray looked to the side and saw Eevee standing at the door.
While Gastly was temporarily disoriented, Eevee leapt on top of Gray and hastily pulled him up. Gray managed to get up somewhat unsteadily and followed Eevee out.
Still in his pajamas, he went down the stairs as fast as he could, only to find that the entire orphanage was in utter chaos. All of the furniture had been flipped over, and many Pokemon were engaged in a wild brawl.
"What's going on?" Gray murmured, shocked. At that moment, he noticed that several Pokemon had cornered the caretakers in the kitchen.
"Stop!" he yelled at them. Only then did he realize that the group was led by his Shuppet.
"Shuppet?! Please stop whatever you're doing now. Can't you see you're scaring the caretakers?"
When Shuppet turned around, Gray saw that she was no longer the kind Shuppet he knew; the look on her face conveyed nothing but hatred and rage.
"Gray!" Screamed one of the cornered women. "The children! The children are gone! They woke up in the middle of the night and went out into the forest. We tried to stop them, but the Pokemon suddenly attacked us. Gray, you must save them, please!"
"Okay! I'll bring them back as soon as possible!" Gray replied.
"I can track them, Gray," Eevee told him.
"You can?" Gray asked in surprise. "What are we waiting for? Let's go save them!"
But, the moment he said that, every Pokemon turned to stare at him. Gary took a step back, frightened by their stares, which seemed to bore into him. The most terrifying thing, though, was the sight of Shuppet staring at him with such malice that sent chills down his spine.
Eevee let out a roar as loud as she could. The floor and walls shook as the Pokemon were thrown off their feet. At that moment, Shuppet suddenly came to her senses.
She saw Gray looking at her in fear and realized what she had done. Before she could do anything else, out of nowhere, she felt a sharp pain in her head. Something was trying to take control of her again. Though this time, she fought back, because she didn't want to see her friend get hurt.
However, no matter how hard she tried, she could not fight against that force that was taking control of her. She was about to give in, but then she noticed the other Pokemon advancing on Gray. In a last-ditch effort to protect him, she drew all her strength and unleashed a powerful Night Shade that drove all the Pokemon away.
And then she blacked out.
"Shuppet!" Gray yelled as he ran to pick her up. "Are you okay?"
"Don't worry, she's just lost consciousness," Eevee told him.
"Is something controlling her?" he asked.
"Yes," Eevee nodded. "And the children as well."
"So, if we want to save Shuppet and the kids, we have to stop whoever is doing this?"
"Yes," Eevee replied.
Gray gently placed Shuppet on the couch before nodding to Eevee. "Okay, let's go!"
He ran out of the orphanage at full speed followed closely by Eevee. Together, they went into the woods. He often went here for a walk but had never been here at night. The forest looked very different than it did during the day, as Gray soon realized. It was as if it was not the forest he was very familiar with.
The red, frantic eyes of a fleeing Hoothoot met Gray's as he marched farther into the forest. Zubats' anxious cries echoed in the distance. It seemed that even the wild Pokemon in the forest were running away in terror.
At least wild Pokemon wouldn't be an issue, Gray thought, but his train of thinking was suddenly interrupted by an unusual sound.
