Los Angeles, one year before the Chosen Killings

Piggy had finished the final dancing figure on the wall, painted in the blood of a dead man. Earlier in the day he had removed the cover from the guillotine. Kacey had stared at it for a long time, paying special attention to the blood-stained blade.

Her body was so weak at this point that she could hardly lift her arm or turn her head. She felt like a pile of bones stacked against the wall. Kacey's stomach had become a separate entity, a living thing that gnawed constantly at her insides. And the smell… the smell of decomposition was indescribable. There had been a few times that Piggy had sprayed air freshener but all that did was add an additional, slightly less offensive layer to the stench.
