The leader's composure, which was already rattled, faltered further as Nicholas's sharp questions arose. The other vampires around them stiffened as they exchanged nervous glances. They all knew that they had done something they shouldn't have done, and that was to actually dare act in the manner they did toward Lyle and his group.

They were all true vampires, but none of them came from a clan that had a Vampire Lord leading it, and the difference between a clan that had one, and one that didn't, was immense. The difference was actually staggering, so much that a clan without a Lord could never dare offend the members of the other clan.
