It was a shock, a miracle, and quite possibly a sign of the apocalypse. Sweet words and believable promises were Carl’s stock and trade and how he got by in the show we called life. If he hadn’t been born rich, he probably would have made a fortune anyway as one of the best conmen the world had ever seen.

Even so, he wrote the promised check for the rest we needed to get the office space and stay in the black. It didn’t even bounce or turn to ashes in my hands.

Maybe his life on the run and near-fatal torture had actually done a number on him and changed him for the better.

Not all at once of course, that only ever happened in stories, authors with God-like powers making the characters do what they wanted because their vision of the story demanded it. Not because that was what the characters would actually do.
