His father's voice reverberated down the empty hall. Even from across the hallway, Denis could make out the distant gaze of frigid disdain. His father's hateful reaction to his defeats was evident in his eyes.

The idea of going there exhausts Denis, so he doesn't even bother. His father waved him off, even though he saw what was coming. If he waved at him once, that was still a directive for him to proceed.
