Bab 80: Arrows
Back where the main battle was taking place and where most of the attention was drawn to, Mallory had continued to raise a barrier to block any incoming attacks and swung her spear around to hit any that passed through.
Tia and Hiiro had stayed behind Mallory at all times and they moved along with her with every step she took.
They could not remain so out in the open for so long since they would soon be surrounded and it would be far more difficult to defend themselves.
There was a limit to how much Magic Power could be used before a mage experienced Mind Down.
Mallory had raised her Magic stat quite high but it was not yet at the stage where it could let her continue fighting forever.
She knew it and the enemy knew it too which was why they did not stop firing upon her until the moment that her barrier had dropped.
Each of the arrows aimed towards her, Tia and Hiiro were aimed to wound or kill them so there was no need to hesitate when it came to using lethal force.
The people in the mountain pass may have been defending their land and attacking some invaders so such a scenario fit well with the situation but Mallory could see their auras and what lingered around their bodies.
Mallory thought to herself as she slowly made her way towards a large part of the mountain pass where there was enough cover for the three of them if they squeezed in. 'These auras..are so malignant and sinister.
They are aiming to kill or wound us enough to stop us from being able to leave. It is quite obvious that they are up to no good here and do not want others knowing about them being here.'
It became clearer that they were more like bandits or some other form of group that did a lot of dirty work in the shadows.
For them to be near Visa City at such a time when the city was supposed to face a great tribulation that would be difficult to cross, Mallory had guessed that they may have had some role in it even if small.
She did not know what could be found out from them after completing her task given by Goddess Seshat but anything would be helpful in finding some kind of sign that pointed towards a way to overcome that crisis.
It would be helpful if there was such luck but Mallory had other thoughts. 'No… no matter what they are up to and no matter who they are related to, it is more likely that the information they can give will be limited.'
Those that were taking jobs to do the dirty work of others usually had limited information or were given false information so that the employer would not be found to be connected to any of it.
Usually they would hide their appearance and background when employing such people or they would have someone else act as an intermediary.
In order to move their plans forward with few problems coming back to them, it was the least they needed to do unless they were just amateurs.
It was unlikely that those behind the future downfall of Visa City were going to be so careless unless they were just capable of setting up lots of ongoing plots randomly that would eventually create enough chaos for someone to take advantage of.
Each of the previous plots that Mallory had uncovered had some kind of aim behind it and each of them destabilised the city in some way or created more chaos inside or outside of the city.
The main issue was that none of the people that had been caught had any useful information to point towards others that had a much bigger involvement in the various plots.
There were some connected to the different events that had been active in the past but had not shown up again in Visa City so it was difficult to locate them to punish them for their crimes.
The arrows continued to rain down upon the three of them as Mallory was kept busy fending off the arrows. "Hap! Ha!"
Valis was juggled around in the air and her body as it switched between her hands and occasionally how far she held on the staff part of Valis.
Her use of Valis started to become more flexible and each adjustment had allowed for a more precise use of the length of it as her one arrow was cut down in front of her.
Another came from another angle but Valis twirled around so that the back end came around in front of her and precisely came into the right position to knock it away.
One more came from above and the head of Valis reached it before it came down upon Tia.
