Ethera's pov;
Eric releases me from the hug at last and I just smile at him and he returns it .
"You don't have to apologize Eric . Mistakes sometimes serve the good at the end" I say trying to make him feel better for whatever he is apologizing for. What happened between Avery and him anyway? I will ask Sheila after he leaves.
"Uh what? Since when are you so wise in speech Avery?" He asks chuckling and looking at me surprised. Oh right I have to blend with Avery's personality.
"You know me , I sometimes act silly but I am smarter than I seem" I say as chill as Avery would be. Please let it slide.
He ruffles my hair suddenly and just smiles brightly at me, "of course love , of course" Wow they must really have an intimate relationship for him to look at her like this and act so loving . Why did she never mention their dynamics as a couple?
"By the way I came to pick you up for school , you coming or?" He asks , I look at Sheila and she signals me a clear no.
She is right , I have a lot to learn before I expose myself to her entourage.
"I am not going to class today but thank you for thinking of dropping me . That is very nice of you"
He looks confused once again "I mean I do this everyday so it's not a big deal . Are you sure you okay? Are you sick?" He asks. Shoot , maybe I should refrain from giving comments or else he will understand what is really going on here.
"I am not . I just want to stay inside today , you know catching up with Sheila and doing girl stuff" I say randomly.
He nods and hugs me again "alright then, I'll see you tomorrow?"
"Yes sure" I reply and he smiles at me. He likes smiling a lot doesn't he? Very adorable I would say. Nice taste Avery.
Eric says goodbye to Sheila and I and he goes out of the house leaving me with Sheila alone . Finally I can breathe.
"Well that was bizarre" I exclaim.
"Tell me about it , but it must be even more for you since you have no clue of what is going on"
"Yes , what happened between Avery and Eric anyway? Why was he apologizing just now?" I ask.
Sheila sighs "what happened was that , the other night we hosted some friends here at the apartment to introduce Eric to them and just have some fun. We played a game called dare or drink" What's that? Never heard of such a game. She has to teach me that as well.
"During the game Eric was dared to kiss Avery on the lips for 10seconds and he did , I thought it had gone well and that it brought them clarity in their relationship but it only made it awkward and Avery started acting weird as she was confused of their status as friends , she ended up pushing Eric away and then when she went to campus she met Eric and Lore who seemed too close and I guess she got upset and just left and that is why Eric came to apologize today. He must have felt like he was pushing Avery away and hurting her even though it was really Avery who hurt him" Wow , that is a complicated situation Avery put herself in.
"But wait. Why didn't they refuse to kiss? I mean they are not married and so it shouldn't have happened" if this was in Alba , Avery and Eric would have been shamed by the whole community.
Sheila face palms herself and shakes her head in disbelief "Right. I had forgotten you are from an old era so of course you would have such beliefs. Look Ethera , here people who love each other or even those who just feel like it kiss to show their love . We don't have to wait for married or anything official . We are free to express ourselves as we see fit , this is America for you girl"
America. Never heard of the place either. Maybe it doesn't exist just yet.
"And plus , when you are playing such games you either do the dare or you get a penalty. And trust me I know they both enjoyed that kiss . They just don't want to cross a certain line in their relationship which is why they keep it low key , especially Avery . I don't know what is up with that girl , she should just face her feelings and be with Eric , the poor man is waiting and will probably wait for her his entire life" she shakes her head.
"So they are just friends?" I ask for clarification.
She nods "They are but they both love each other , it's clear , I think you saw it earlier with Eric's behavior around her. They are just very stubborn and don't want to admit it so we just have to sit on the side lines and wait for a miracle to happen that will unite them"
"Ah Love affairs are never this complicated back home , if you love someone you just go for it and start preparing for the wedding and all of that. Things go slow here" I say and she just laughs at me.
"Oh Ethera , you will have to get used to this because you have so much to see and I don't need you that clueless and shocked every time" she says as she starts cooking breakfast.
I guess she is right . This is all new but I need to get a grip.
We eat breakfast together which consists of a meal we don't have in Alba , it's called pancake and we are having cereal with that , also new to me but I love them , very sweet but to my liking.
Sheila and I spend the day together going through the numerous things I have to know about the future world.
From the slangs to the clothing style which are quite literally full of nudity .
To the food culture , the manners and behaviors expected of females and males.
I actually learnt that some females prefer being referred to as men an same goes for me , she said they are called transgenders .
It is quite weird to me to grasp such a concept.
In Alba such people would be accused of witchcraft and hanged for going against the laws of nature.
In short I have a lot of things to adjust to.
How does Avery do this?
I guess now I understand why she was always shocked of the small things in Alba , the culture here is very opposite from what I have known all my life.
