Bab 9: Oh here we go again
After I returned to my favourite and definitely not beaten like bitch Red Lake Kingdom's army I was able to find out what happened after I got carried away killing enemies. Lukas and Elf used their authority and tried to hold their ground. It was pretty rough, enemy numbers made it impossible to break out so the only option was to keep holding and hope. At the end barely third of platoon was still fighting and their circle was shrinking even more. But luckily Red Lake army was able to fight back and enemy decided to fall back leaving my platoon.
Lukas was joking that our platoon has some good-bad omen of ending up nose deep in shit but still make it out. But he is not totally wrong so far my platoon was always amongst survivors although we always pay hefty price for that. And now again I have to replenish losses and bring platoon back in action. Again I need to drill dumb recruits into soldiers, I am so tired of this but I have some things to do first.
I went to find those platoons that were on our flanks and left us alone. After asking some questions from camp quartermaster I have found those damn cowards. I saw a bunch of soldiers sitting around bonfire and cooking food. Instead of being punished they sit and drink enjoying their useless lives. I couldn't tolerate this so I just stepped in and spitted in their cooking pot. This made them angry and some even wanted to attack me but few good kicks stopped the hot-heads while the rest decided to step back.
" What the fuck are you doing?"
" Giving cowards the treatment they deserve and even now most of you chicken out. Instead of eating and drinking here you deserve to be flogged to death for your showing enemies your backs"
One tall man stepped out of a crowd, he was wearing band of platoon leader.
" You must be commander of those dumbasses that instead of leaving the battle decided to fight and die. Unlike those idiots whose corpses now rot down there my lads made it out and can see another day"
Hearing his words fury overcome me and I decided to kill him in the most painful way possible. I took out short knife and dashed at him. He tried to fight back but of little success so in the end I hit him right in stomach and gall bladder. He just fall down and started to scream, such wounds will certainly kill him and he will die in the most painful way.
" Listen here pig, I have just pierced your stomach and gall bladder. There is no healer that can treat such wounds so you will experience very painful and slow death. This the least I can do to avenge my boys that died due to your cowardice"
I planned to leave since my job here was done but I was caught by patrol. Sergeant saw how I killed that craven and ordered to capture me. I wanted to escape but I was already surrounded so I decided to give in. I could of course kill some of them and flee but I was dead tired and didn't want to get more troubles. So I was tied and escorted to camp drill master for questioning and punishment.
To my luck drill master after finding out that I used to serve under Magnus in Hangman's Fort give me chance to tell my side of a story. I was able to gain his sympathy but he still had to punish me since I committed crime of killing Red Lake Kingdom's soldier. So I was stripped of my position of platoon leader and sentenced to ten lashes. After punishment I was brought back to my platoon where I told Lukas that he is new platoon leader and that I plan to leave army.
" Askar but what are you going to do?"
" I will go and fight as mercenary, will create my own company"
"Do you think you can that easily leave army and become a mercenary?"
" Drill Master responsible for our camp told me that kingdom lacks funds to maintain its army so a lot of soldiers will be discharged. So I don't think there will be big problem with my discharge. And since I only know how to fight, career of mercenary is the only option"
" Hmm, hey do you think there will be a place in your company for one trusted dwarf?"
" Are you sure? Life of merc is a lot more dangerous than that of garrison soldier"
" Askar, I am dwarf stuck in human army, do you think I enjoy staying here? Only in your platoon I got treated better than shit."
" Well then let's take Elf with us, I doubt that he wants to stay here as well."
" Haha, Human, Dwarf and Elf, sounds like the beginning of some shitty anecdote. Cheers for new stage in our lives"
Next few days we spent dealing with our discharge from army and getting our money from quartermaster. Another problem was equipment, our weapons belonged to Hangman's Fort so we had to spent part of our wages to buy back them. But finally after dealing with all those problems we were able to leave army and start our career as mercenary.
We decided that we will leave Red Lake Kingdome and travel to Land of Warring Baronies. Land of Warring Baronies always looks for people ready to kill for money. It is perfect place to gain money and reputation for such beginners like us. The only thing we need to do is to survive.
