After Sylvia got pregnant and left home, the family was unable to find her.

Also, Sylvia had changed her name and kept a low profile by living in a small town like Linton.

No one in the family knew what happened to Sylvia after she left.

If she had not come home previously, Tom would not even know she was still alive.
