The Moon Goddess’ Temple

When Shani returned to her tent, the night was blanketing the forest in dusky blue. An outfit had been set next to her bed—the colors of Blacktooth, black and cream, sewn into a beautiful dress. It was the first time she wouldn’t be wearing the black and deep red of the Bloodrose.

As she shrugged off her regular outfit and shimmied into the thigh-length dress, she felt a sudden longing for her mother. Every month Rossie never failed to help her get ready, and though it was nothing special because it happened so often, the simple ritual held a meaningful place in Shani’s heart. Rossie always combed her hair and braided it in loops around a rose crown. In turn, Shani tied red ribbons into hers. It was a brief and simple moment where they faced no judgment, only love for each other in a cruel world.
