Bab 133: Bloodletting

"What happened to you after her death?" Ivo couldn't imagine there were that many people willing to take in an orphaned kid recently arrived in the city. 

And by now he had a pretty good idea of how well any charity institutions ran in São Paulo: which was to say not at all. And that was when they weren't just blatant money laundering fronts.

"I wandered around, begged for food." Davi's fingers were so tense in Ivo's hand that he was afraid they would snap. "Tried to get away from the creeps. Easier said than done, but I managed. Eventually I ended up in a community."

Seeing the blank look in Ivo's face he added, "Remember that neighbourhood of dirt streets, shipping container houses, and tin sheds we drove past on your first day?"
