"Hey I know! Since you're a stray and I'm also homeless then let's build a new home together! I'll become your master and, bathe you and I'll also cook food for us! You'll obviously do the hunting and other related tasks!" The girl's squeaky enthralling voice said with a lace of hope.
Kuroka just looked at the little girl in contemplation, the girl was an airhead and would probably be more trouble than she would like to handle, but looking at her hopeful cute face, she couldn't say no.
"Ugh fine, just until I find someone who'll take care of you." Kuroka spoke in defeat.
"Yay! You won't regret this, we'll look out for each other and become a baddass warrior duo!" The little girl fantasized happily.
Looking at the little bright ball of energy, Kuroka was saddened for a second. If only she was strong enough she could've took her sister with her. Maybe then Koneko wouldn't reject herself and embrace who she truly was. Every time she got the chance, Kuroka would observe her little sister.
She was under the protection of the Gremory household and had a new sister figure in her life, it made Kuroka smile in relief but the pain of feeling left out from being in her sister's life also lingered and clawed at her heart insistently.
"Hey are you okay?" A voice chirped causing Kuroka to get out of her trance and look at the little girl who looked up at her with worry.
"Y-yeah, I'm just thinking about something." Kuroka said with a smile.
"Anyway we need to give you a name since I can't just call you little girl" Kuroka said as she patted the girl's head.
"Ohh...gimme one then!" The girl said with excitement.
"Are you sure you don't want to think of one yourself?" Kuroka asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Nah, it would be more special if a cool magical cat warrior gave me one." The girl chimed, Kuroka shook her head in exasperation. She bowed her head for a second and started brainstorming.
"Okay since you have dark skin tone and you're teeth are shaper than anything I've seen, uhh, I think Kurokiba would suit you." Kuroka proclaimed proudly, and ignored the odd sense of accomplishment that made it feel like she named her first pet.
"Ew... You're really terrible at naming miss stray, but I think I'll stick with it cause it'll stick eventually." Kurokiba nodded to herself as she repeated her new name over and over again; she didn't want to forget.
"Well glad you like it, and my name isn't stray call me Kuroka!" Kuroka stated with some irritation.
"Okay then! First order of business is taking a bath, then we'll get food and talk about ourselves so that we know more about each other. "Kurokiba excitedly said as she pulled Kuroka towards a nearby body of water.
As they submerged themselves in the water Kuroka stared at Kurokiba's blissful face as she enjoyed the water.
"How did you even know there was water here?" Kuroka made small talk, trying to pry for more info about the girl.
"I guess you could say I have a great sense of smell and hearing, I can even hear the blood in your veins; although this happens only when I'm hungry." Kurokiba replied casually.
"Can you hear anything like that right now?" Kuroka asked.
"No, right now the most I can hear is the breathing and small movements of any animal within a certain range." Kurokiba answered honestly.
"You haven't eaten since yesterday though so how come you're full?" Kuroka asked.
"I ate a few fruits yesterday so they should last me a while." Kuroka didn't spot the lie as she nodded to herself and stopped questioning the girl.
After that the two talked for a while, Kurokiba also asked Kuroka a few questions like why she was here and how her mist works.
Kuroka replied vaguely and showed discomfort so Kurokiba decided to stop the questioning and just enjoy the bath.
After bathing, they dressed up and Kuroka used magic to start a fire, Kurokiba looked at Kuroka with stars in her eyes and demanded to know how she did that.
Seeing that the girl was enthralled by her magic, Kuroka couldn't hold back and ended up showing her a few more tricks. After that they had rabbit stew for breakfast.
Shockingly for Kuroka, Kurokiba threw up after eating half her food. Kurokiba became ill an hour after and spent the rest of the day sleeping.
...
As the next days came and went, Kurokiba wasn't getting any better, this caused Kuroka to worry and start frantically apologizing and blaming herself for giving the little girl bad food.
"Hehehe, don't worry Kuroka, it's really not your fault. To be honest I can't eat normal food, not with the curse I have." Kurokiba stated sadly as she looked at Kuroka who was on the verge of tears.
"What do you mean curse?" Kuroka asked and used her sleeves to wipe her tears.
"I'm sure you noticed I'm not really human, I'm half ghoul, I can't eat normal food. I can only eat the flesh of humans, devils and angels." The girl said fearfully and sadly.
She closed her eyes expecting disgust and rejection from Kuroka, but she felt a sudden warmth as Kuroka embraced her.
"You poor thing, it must be hard having to live through such an ordeal. Is that why you struggled so much to eat the food I cooked?" Kuroka asked.
Kurokiba said nothing as she hugged Kuroka back and fought off the nausea and stomach cramps.
