Serena felt her heart constrict and suddenly it was hard to breathe. She could feel Charlton's eyes boring into her being and suddenly, shame. She felt so ashamed of herself that her eyes quickly looked elsewhere, while unconsciously, she tried to pull her hand from Geoffrey's arm.

Geoffrey noticed the minute changes in Serena and so, before she could even pull her hand back, he covered hers with his. This made her look at him, while he gave her an inquisitive smile, as if asking, what's wrong.

Serena suddenly remembered where they were and that all eyes were looking at them. She shook her head to reassure him.

Reaching the bottom of the staircase, the host and hostess of the party were first to greet them. Meanwhile, the others congregated towards them to also do the same.
