She turned to look at Yakov and softly asked, " Did the Duke try to move the children last night, is this the reason you were so late in coming back?" 

Yakov left the palace under the pretext that he was only going for a lookout and nothing else but he didn't return till the morning, just what kind of lookout was he doing that he couldn't return after an hour or so?
