Bab 285: Let Me Do This For You

Callie was doomed. Everything she had worked for could be gone in an instant if Don knew about Carter. 

She was having a panic attack. It had been a while since she had one but they happened a lot after the first time she was assaulted. She couldn't breathe. She couldn't breathe!

Adam called her name, sounding fairly panicky himself. He probably hadn't seen anyone have a panic attack before. He gripped her forearms. "Look at me. I won't let him take Carter away. Do you hear me?"

"How? If he demands a paternity test—!" 

"He can't get custody if Carter is legally someone else's son. I'll adopt him, okay? So breathe."

Callie had to take a few minutes to focus on her breathing before she could even try to respond to that coherently. Adopt him? How could Adam adopt him? Wouldn't he have to actually be Carter's stepdad for that?
