Bab 45: - Reapers vs Ironforged, Round Three

"If my memory serves me correctly, we should be sitting on a significant amount of points from this one alone," Gus said.

"Why is it actually so important that we get points?" Anten asked. "Isn't this just some kind of oversized spectacle?"

"It might seem like it's meaningless, but I've heard that eventually, each platoon will fall under the command of one Squad Leader, and I'd imagine this is something to do with it," Gus answered.

"Plus it's broadcasted, so I guess people seeing us now might want to work with us in the future, so long as we perform well," Emmy added.

"Although I do question why the broadcasting," Gus though aloud, his mind led there by Emmy's comment. "But enough about the hypotheticals and what'll happen in the future. For now, let's focus on the last round."

"We going to switch up the plan?" Joel asked.

"I don't think we need to," Gus said. "We've got them completely and utterly countered. Just keep to the same plan as the last round. If they're as stagnant in mind as they are in their strategy, then we'll be done within moments."

As the klaxon rang out through the arena, the Reapers moved much in the same way that they had in round 2. Sure enough, the area surrounding the flag was soon blocked from view, as thick clouds of smoke rose from the canisters on the floor.

"Anten, be ready to count us," Gus said over his shoulder. Talking into his comm device, he yelled "Fire!"

The sound of the Repeaters being fired filled his ears, from all sides. Although they were designed specifically for use in the academy, and therefore were quieter than they would be otherwise, the sound still drowned out everything else in his hearing. As a result, the first warning he received of the threat that was posed to them came as a shot slammed into his side.

Immediately, he felt his muscles tighten, and instantly lost all control over them. Unable to resist it, he hit the floor. Judging from the sounds that grew slightly quieter with every passing moment, the same fate that befell him was also happening to his team.

If there was something that Gus hated about the academy, it was this. Losing control over your body was, to him at least, one of the most terrifying, most mentally taxing things that could happen to him. With your body unable to move, it was only natural that your brain would go into overdrive with thought, and for whatever reason Gus could only think negative things while he was in that vulnerable state.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Gus heard the klaxon ring and his body was back under his control.

"I won't lie" a voice spoke over Gus, "I'm surprised you didn't expect us to switch up our play in that last round." A dark hand appeared in front of him.

"Yeah, well, stubborn strategies come from stubborn minds," Gus said as he took the hand.

"Where's that saying from?" the person who offered his hand asked. "I don't think I've ever heard it in the UNNCA. Oh, by the way, I'm Tyson," he said. "You're Gus, right? I've got to say, that fight in the combat class on the first day was impressive. Taking down someone that much bigger than you? No wonder you collapsed afterwards."

'This guy knows me? Wait, Tyson..'

"Tyson Scott, right?"

"Yeah, that's me!" he said with a smile, clearly happy that Gus knew who he was. "Look, I'll be a little bit honest with you. We just watched a ton of replays from your game last week, and decided to adapt to it. That's why we rushed first round, and saved the adaptation until the last round. But hey, no hard feelings?"

"Course not," Gus said. "Listen, a couple of us trained with a couple of people from our last opponents the other day, nothing serious, only something that just happened. But let me know if you want to try and get something going with our two squads. Not assuming you're the Leader, just making a suggestion."

"I'll consider it, sure. Oh, and I am the Leader, so don't worry about that."

As Gus and the others left the arena, leaving through the same door that they entered, they found Jet waiting for them. He was leaning against the wall, with his arms folded and his eyes firmly fixed on the door.

"Waiting for us?" Gus asked.

"Pretty much," Jet replied.

Gus signalled for the others to head on down the corridor as he continued to speak with Jet. "How come you brought us here again this week? Coincidence?"

"Not at all. Me and the other teachers you have, we each have a different squad in each of the platoons. It's our responsibility to get them to games, give them missions, so on and so on."

'Aren't there only four teachers?'

"I bet you're thinking, 'but Jet, there are only four teachers,' or something like that. Well, the fifth is the Cohort Commander. For reference, they're the person in charge of looking out for your entire cohort, that is, the people that make up the other platoons as well as yours on this entire floor of the station."

"So you're… what? Here to chastise us for losing in there or something?"

"Nothing of the sort. You turned their strength against them, which is a good strength to have. Besides, failure is a good builder of character. I'm only glad it happened here, and not in more… serious conditions. Anyway, the real reason I'm here is that I've got a new mission for you. Obviously, up to you if you accept. I won't force anything onto you."

"Let's hear it, at least," Gus said.

"It's a coordinated effort, between you, the Earthen Security Force of EarthSec, and the other squad that won last week, the Blood Knights. There's a rally for the kneebenders and, as much as I hate it, they have the right to this rally. They requested for additional aid from the academy, and we have to at least offer it. So, it's up to you if you want to accept."
