Bab 30: Aftermath of Prithviraj Chauhan's death

Author Note: After releasing the last chapter, I noticed that there was a mistake on my part… The poet that I mentioned in the last chapter, the name was Chand Virdai ( not Chand Birdai)... I have already corrected my mistake… and I personally thank all of my readers who pointed out this mistake.

---

Here in India, After hearing the news of his Father-in-law's death by the hands of Maharaja Prithviraj Chauhan, Qutubuddin Aibak was enraged and attacked Ajmer once again.

This time, he plundered Ajmer to its roots. He destroyed temples, captured women and killed nearly 300,000 men. He also killed the puppet ruler Hariraja and crowned Prithviraj Chauhan's son, Govindraja as a puppet ruler for the kingdom of Ajmer.

At that time, Muslim historians mentioned him building a structure called Aadhai Din Ka Zopda, one of the oldest mosques in India. But, the Indian historians never told us that the mosque structure the Muslims called the oldest mosque in India was actually a Jain temple…

The history dates back to 660 AC, when a ruler of the Chauhan Dynasty, Seth Viramdeva Kala constructed a complex with a lot of Hindu as well as Jain temples. Later, it was used as a Jain institute where Jain literature was taught but Qutubuddin Aibak took the main structure and added the pillars from the surrounding 20-30 temples that were surrounding the complex to construct a mosque in just two and half days.

It was said that all the hindu idols were either destroyed or covered with plaster to hide the fact that it was originally a temple.

He then the mosque was named Adhai Din ka Zopra (literal meaning zopra built in two and half days). Such Irony and nobody wants to correct such a mistake.

Same thing happened when Qutubuddin Aibak constructed the so-called Qutub Minar…

After his plundering in Ajmer, Qutubuddin Aibak directed his campaign toward Traitor Jaichand's territory of Varanasi (Present-day Uttar Pradesh). He easily defeated the traitor and expanded his territory from Lahore to Bengal.

At that time, on the northeast side of Varanasi stood an ancient Hindu complex. It was so huge that it looked like a city in itself. The complex was called Vishnupada, an ancient pada (planned city) in India… Oldest known to mankind. According to historical records, Vishnupada was built before 5,000 BC as it was mentioned in Ancient Hindu Texts like the Vedas.

At the time, there were more than a 27 temples in the ancient city of Vishnupada. Qutubuddin Aibak came and destroyed all the main temples in the complex to build the Qutub Minar we know today.

Still, the ancient city of Vishnupada was so vast that he couldn't destroy it entirely. So, he built a mosque on top of the foundations of the ancient city of Vishnupada. All the small temples and ancient structures that Qutubuddin Aibak was unable to destroy got buried beneath his newly built Mosque.

It is also noted that the people who destroyed the temple complex also placed the idols of hindu gods upside down to disrespect them.

Author Note: Ironically, when the central government decided to build the Kashi Vishwanath corridor, the government rediscovered more than 40 Ancient Hindu temples in Allahabad. These temples were dated back to 3,000 BC.

I like the quote of PM Modi when he gave a speech after discovering the ancient temples…

The quote was, "Yaha bhi khuda, waha bhi khuda, jaha nahi khuda, waha kal khudega…"

Literal translation, "We dig here, we dig there, (Khuda = digging… but in Urdu, Khuda = God. so, the second meaning becomes 'God is here, God is there… ') where we haven't dig (where there is no God), we will dig that place tomorrow to find out if there is God buried there or not…!"

After doing all his work, Qutubuddin Aibak declared himself the sultan (King) of India and set his capital as Lahore. After his declaration, he settled in Lahore and was never able to come out.

Just as the Hindu people thought that their suffering was over, A new Muslim general entered the lands of India. A much crueller ruler than Qutubuddin Aibak, his name, Allaudin Khilji.

---

The story started when in 1290, Jalaluddin khilji destroyed the slave mamluk dynasty and became the sultan of Delhi. At the time his commander was his nephew Allaudin Khilji.

After repelling the Mongol invasions in Afghanistan, Allaudin Khilji returned to India with the desire to expand his territory southwards.

He looted small kingdoms in Gujarat as well as Rajasthan and collected massive loot to overthrow his uncle Jallaudin. In 1296, he successfully became the Sultan of India. He led an invasion in northwest India destroying several Rajput clans.

While the Rajput clans in Rajasthan were getting weaker and weaker due to constant attacks from Allaudin Khilji, there was a kingdom east of Rajasthan still holding onto its last breath.

The kingdom was the Rajput Kingdom of Marwar (Later known as Mewad..)

King Ratan Simha was the ruler of the kingdom of Marwar. His Queen, Rani Padmini (also known as Rani Padmavati) was a beauty that defied the heavens. She was so beautiful that several poets described her beauty as 'the beauty that outshines a full moon'.

In 1297, when Allaudin Khilji heard about Rani Padmini's beauty he set out toward Marwar to meet her. Although he was refused by Queen Padmini, Allaudin Khilji accidentally saw her reflection inside a mirror placed on the palace wall.

He was so bewitched by her beauty that he urged her to marry him then and there. But, Rani Padmini outright refused him and said that she already has a husband.

Dejectedly Allaudin Khilji returned to his camp. Still, he was unable to forget the face he saw in the mirror.

Making up his mind, he decided to attack the kingdom of Marwar.

The battle was renowned for the resistance of Marwar Rajput forces and the Jauhar attempted by Rani Padmini along with 15,000 noble ladies inside the fort of Chittod. (Full story next chapter…!)
