As soon as he saw signs of human habitation, Aaron let out a sigh of relief.

Walking on the path, one step deep, the next step shallow, he finally arrived at his home.

To call it a home was a stretch; it was just a few shacks pieced together, neither windproof nor fully capable of keeping out the rain.

Before the shacks, there was a small vegetable garden, with some vegetables planted in it.

An old farmer, with a hoe on his back and a back so bent it resembled a hunchback, passed by and greeted him, "Mr. La... you're back?"

"Yes, I'm back."

Aaron nodded in acknowledgment.

"Alas... if you ask me, young man, you shouldn't aim too high, " the old farmer sighed as he walked on. "I've heard others read out the Government Office notice at the marketplace... exotic flowers and rare stones, precious birds and beasts, get one and you can avoid corvee labor... but isn't it easier said than done?"
