There is nothing more painful than regret and choosing myself was supposed to feel good but just as calling off the engagement didn't feel good, this felt worse.

I waited patiently for Emily's outburst. I waited for the name calling and the guilt trip but it never came.

All she did was wrap her arms around me and press her lips to my neck like she was going to kiss me there but ended up changing her mind.

In that particular moment, I wished I could wrap her up in a protective blanket and take her with me to Africa. Take her away from whatever demons she was fighting and whatever unknown future that terrified her but I couldn't.

I have spent all my life being the good son, the selfless boyfriend and the caring crown prince and look what good that did for me.
