Rowan pushed his fingers against his temples, struggling to think through the rolling fog of death that wanted to drag him away.

The poison that engulfed the cemetery had woven itself into the fabric of reality just like it had in the clearing, but the sheer immensity of what tainted this place had also begun to work a change that he could sense but not identify. The new disturbance wheedled its way into the base of his skull, muddling his thoughts and filling him with a vague buzz of agitation.

He waved off Wren's hand where it still rested on the back of his neck. "I'm fine now. Please…I will feel better if you save your energy for yourself."

"This is too much for you." Wren frowned and hesitantly removed his hand. "Let me take you away from here."

"No." Rowan held out his arm to stop Wren from grabbing him. The pressure in his skull forced the word out in a sharp burst, making it sound more like a rebuke than a mere refusal.
