Enzo Romano took his chances. In a distracted moment of his captors, he leapt forward, aiming for the gun that still dangled from the fingers of Jessica's mother, and swung it. But he missed and landed on the ground, taking Mr. Gonzalez down with him.
"ENOUGH!" Mrs. Heyman shouted, pointing the gun at Enzo, who lay on the floor, still struggling with Gonzalez. He had seen many things in his life, many unexpected things. But right now, he couldn't risk watching Jessica get killed by her own mother. Jessica was too innocent. She hadn't seen the worst of the world, and she wanted nothing to do with her mother. Yet, she still believed there was some good in the woman. Enzo wanted to keep it that way. He wanted to protect her while showing her that perhaps the world didn't have to be so cruel. But he wasn't sure how that would happen because, in the end, a shot had to be fired, and a bullet would meet someone.
