Training Montage

"Alright. To start, let's review your movesets. I still haven't seen you guys actually perform any moves since that one time Cyndaquil burned down the house, so it'll be a pleasant surprise. Oshawott, you go first."

"Heh! Watch in awe of my greatness!"

Following that statement, Oshawott quickly demonstrated four moves in quick succession. While Pokemon could learn more than four moves, most newer Pokemon usually only have four.

First, a somewhat pressurized beam of water. It didn't seem to have too much power but had a decent range and speed.

Second, he covered himself in water, before launching himself full speed at a nearby training log. This had rather decent power, but not anything too insane.

Third, he did a somewhat peculiar dance, akin to raising a sword in the air, causing a golden aura to shine momentarily before he struck the same log. The dance seemingly increased his power.

Finally, this one was the most surprising. Oshawott took out his scalchop from his belly, slashing out with it, creating a long, extended, blade shining with a bronze light that cleaved the log in half.

"So... Water Gun, Aqua Jet, Swords Dance, and your last move. What the hell was that?"

"Hehe! It's a secret move only our family knows. Sacred Sword. Supposedly, one of my ancestors befriended a legendary Pokemon back in the day and learned this move from them."

Well, that was surprising. I vaguely remembered Sacred Sword being an egg move for Oshawott, but I would've never guessed my Oshawott would've had it. After all, while I did kinda grow up with all three, their parents never let me do anything even close to Pokemon training with them due to their young age.

Clapping my hands to gather attention, I moved my attention towards Rowlet. "Rowlet, you're next up," I said.

Rowlet began to silently demonstrate his moves.

First, he threw out a variety of sharp leaves, making rather shallow marks on the training log. What it found lacking in power, however, it made up for it in sheer quantity.

Second, Rowlet stood still, relaxing his body. Eventually, he began to glow with a green light, which at the moment, currently had unknown effects.

Third, Rowlet began to quickly speed up, until the point he was imperceptible to the human eye. Finally, he appeared right in front of the training log and slashed it with his wing. Definitely very hard to avoid, and very speedy, but the power was rather alright.

Finally, Rowlet was cloaked in a harsh white light. After a few seconds of startup, the harsh light coalesced into transparent wings. After another few seconds, Rowlet flapped his wings, causing the transparent pair of wings to rush at the training log. However, he missed, causing only one wing to barely hit the training log. Even so, the power was extremely formidable. The entire training log was completely broken, with the top half being noticeably missing.

"... What the hell was that?" I questioned in astonishment.

Rowlet pridefully responded, "like Oshawott's Sacred Sword, that was my family's secret move. It came from our ancestor, the son of the original Hisuian Deicidueye that was offered to the hero Rei, who eventually challenged the legendary Pokemon Moltres to a duel. In the end, he lost, but not without a fight. He learned the fearsome Sky Attack, eventually passing it down to become our family's core legacy."

"I see. Razor Leaf, Roost, Aerial Ace, and Sky Attack. Both you and Oshawott have incredibly special movesets. For starter Pokemon, it's simply... absurd."

"Of course. After all, we are the respective heirs of some of the noblest and most ancient Pokemon families, no matter how... uncouth some of us act," Rowlet responded.

Oshawott snapped back, "Huh? What the hell are you trying to say, bastard?"

"I said what I said."

"You gonna say that to my face?"

"I'm currently doing so."

"Hah! You're looking for a fight!"

Thankfully, before things got too heated, Cyndaquil intervened. "Break it up, guys. You do this every time," he groaned. Only at times like these would Cyndaquil show emotions other than depression and anxiety. Though, I don't know whether exasperation and annoyance are much better.

"He's right, you know. We still need to have Cyndaquil demonstrate his moveset. You guys can spar later," I told them, nodding towards Cyndaquil.

With the 'ok' given from me, Cyndaquil began to demonstrate his moveset.

First, he let loose a short burst of flame onto a training log. It did a decent amount of damage, but not anything crazy.

Second, he seemingly did nothing. However, after about a second, the training log was crushed. Based on this, it's likely an invisible attack. And the attack was quite powerful.

Third, Cyndaquil began to relax, before he was covered with a light purple aura. After the aura faded, he began to run around, showing a clear increase in speed.

Finally, Cyndaquil cloaked himself in flames, before throwing himself at the training log. The training log was completely obliterated. However, due to the incredible force of the attack, Cyndaquil himself took a little bit of damage.

"Just like the other two, your moveset is frankly, insane. From what I've seen, I'd guess you have Ember, Extrasensory, Agility, and Flare Blitz. Am I right?" I asked.

"Mhm. My family doesn't have any super-special secret move, but we have a lot of strong moves ordinary Cyndaquil are unable to learn." Based on what I remembered from my previous life, the story generally checked out. Extrasensory and Flare Blitz were egg moves, meaning they would be rather rare. And I don't remember Cyndaquil ever having the ability to learn Agility in the games, but I have a small recollection of it being used in the anime.

I was snapped out of my thoughts by a snide comment from Oshawott. "Heh. Of course this emo bastard's strongest move is one that hurts himself."

Sigh. I'm not dealing with another fight, so might as well move on. "Alright, guys. Now that we've gone over your movesets, it's time to actually train. We'll do this for anywhere from a few days to a week depending on how combat-ready I feel you guys are."

"First, Cyndaquil. For you, your moveset mostly consists of ranged special attacks, with a physical attacking finisher. We'll be working on your speed and dodging, as well as your use of agility, so you can constantly outpace and range abuse your opponents. As you stay at a distance and confuse your opponents with speed provided from Agility, constantly harass them with Ember and send Extrasensory when they least expect it. We'll do a fair bit of physical training too, to increase Flare Blitz's effectiveness as a finisher." After briefing Cyndaquil, I turned to Rowlet.

"Rowlet. For you, you'll be a bit more mixed. You can constantly harass your opponents aerially and from a distance with Razor Leaf, whose power and accuracy we'll be working on. With Aerial Ace, you can quickly shave off opponent's health at close range, before retreating back to the air. And with Roost, you can quickly recover mid-battle if you ever take damage. Rinse and repeat, and look for an opportunity to use Sky Attack. If the opponent is ever dazed enough to allow you time to charge Sky Attack, go in for the kill."

"Finally, we have Oshawott. Water Gun is a decent ranged option for you, but your moveset is mostly catered to physical attacks. Water Gun can harass them from a distance, as well as allow you to fight against ranged and aerial battles. When you can, set up Swords Dance, then engage with Aqua Jet. After that, attack them with Sacred Sword. Additionally, we'll be working on using Aqua Jet and Sacred Sword in tandem, so you can utilize the speed of Aqua Jet and the power of Sacred Sword."

"Time to start our training. Cyndaquil and Rowlet, you guys are up first." For the first training section, I had Rowlet fly around in the air, and constantly send Razor Leaf towards Cyndaquil. If the opportunity presented itself, Rowlet could briefly go down to use Aerial Ace. Cyndaquil has to dodge the Razor Leaf using Agility, and attempt to hit Rowlet with either Ember or Extrasensory.

Eventually Rowlet was the first one to tap out, after a stray Extrasensory managed to hit him. Rowlet, due to being unable to see it, flew right into it. I had him use Roost, while I quickly set up the next training session with Cyndaquil and Oshawott.

Here, I gave Oshawott the objective of setting up a single sword dance and then hitting Cyndaquil with a Sacred Sword + Aqua Jet combo. Cyndaquil was prohibited from using Flare Blitz and was told to circle around Oshawott with Agility while harassing him with Ember to prevent Swords Dance. He was only allowed to use Extrasensory once Oshawott had set up Swords Dance already.

For the first quarter of the time, Cyndaquil had the clear upperhand. He was much faster, and with Oshawott's restriction of only being able to hit Cyndaquil with Sacred Sword + Aqua Jet, Cyndaquil was able to easily harass him with Ember. Because of the Ember, Oshawott could only choose to evade or attempt to set up Swords Dance while tanking Embers.

However, the tide began to shift near the half-way point. Oshawott realized he could evade using Aqua Jet. He managed to open up a small window of time where he was able to set up a Swords Dance. However, the third quarter was almost as hard as the start. Now, Oshawott had to hit the speedy Cyndaquil, who now had Extrasensory unrestricted.

With the constant threat of invisible Extrasensories, as well as Agility, Oshawott was finding it hard to catch up to Cyndaquil. And while he eventually managed to, he realized one major problem. He couldn't consistently use Aqua Jet and Sacred Sword together. However, near the end, his success rate was bumped up to somewhere around 60-70% allowing for him to get a glancing blow on Cyndaquil.

At this point, Cyndaquil was completely spent, so he was allowed to take a rest while Oshawott and Rowlet began to train. This one was just a normal no-restrictions spar. The battle ended in a clear win for Rowlet, though that was because of a main few things.

First of all, obviously, is the type advantage. While Oshawott was able to land a few water guns on Rowlet, it did much less damage than Rowlet's Razor Leaf due to both base power and type advantage. Taking other moves into play, Oshawott's Sacred Sword + Aqua Jet combo, which from now will be called Aqua Sword, was stronger than Rowlet's Sky Attack. However, while Rowlet's Sky Attack did have more startup time, it managed to land more, since Aqua Sword was rather imperfect, and still had a lower success rate.

Additionally, Rowlet had the ability to harass Oshawott from the sky. Through this, Rowlet wasn't hit nearly as much as Oshawott, who already had previously taken damage from Cyndaquil. However, near the end, when Oshawott was on his last legs, he managed to land an Aqua Jet on Rowlet, stunning him. This stunned Rowlet, allowing Oshawott to pull of a Swords Dance.

With this Swords Dance, a single Aqua Sword would easily knock out Rowlet. However, it wasn't meant to be in the end. The constant fatigue wore down Oshawott, and Rowlet, who became more cautious, harassed him from the air, eventually winning.

After these various training exercises, I took the three Pokemon with me, and did various types of conditioning and physical training with them. In the end, all of us ended up sweaty and tired, causing us to go back to the Pokemon Center and rest. Finally, after a week, we finished our 'Training Montage,' completely confident in challenging the first gym.
