Henry Russell had the number investigated, and news came that same afternoon: the number belonged to an overseas user who had long been missing, and there were no other useful leads.
Upon hearing the news, Charlotte Cooper felt somewhat disappointed. She hadn't expected the case to end like this.
"Do you think the number's owner will know if I call them now?" Charlotte asked.
Henry said nothing. After all, the trail was now cold, so even if they exposed themselves by making the call, there wouldn't be any loss.
When she saw that he didn't object, Charlotte really made the call. The phone rang for a long time but no one answered. She tried again and it was switched off.
Meanwhile, Henry furrowed his brow at the side.
"Switched off?" he asked.
