Half an hour later, the property manager showed us a decent-sized two-bedroom apartment. 

If I was being honest, it was nice. The rooms were clean and modern, enough for an adult and two children. I looked around, pretending I was interested in renting the place while wanting to go home the entire time. It felt wrong to do this, and it put every side of me on edge. Being here made me think of running like Vali had, and I hated it.

"Now, these apartments are usually rented by students and faculty. Do you go to college here?" The manager turned to look at me. I could tell she was skeptical but still wanted me to apply. Maybe Taylor shouldn't have laid it on so thick about the more expensive apartments I could've picked. 

"Yes," I smiled, trying to keep it together. More lies, more making up a life I didn't live. "I'm studying to become a pharmacology tech."
