At that time, Norma Ruby had only three months left to live. Although Gem Atkinson often stayed with her in the hospital, he wasn't always by her side. He was always discussing her condition with the doctors. Sometimes, when he heard about a potential cure or suitable kidney transplant, he would immediately fly out to investigate, once going without sleep for seven days and nights, resting for only an hour each day.

But he almost never dozed off by her side.

The only exception was when he had brought back an experimental treatment from overseas that had a positive effect on Norma Ruby. He was utterly exhausted then. When the effectiveness was confirmed, he relaxed, and it was during that time that he briefly stayed by her side. Even so, he didn't doze off for more than five minutes.

He had special training that allowed him to sleep for no more than five minutes in unfamiliar places or around unrelated people.
