1) Dongshi imitating the knitting of brows: an idiom describing a folklore about Xishi, one of the four great beauties of ancient China. In the story, Dongshi, an ugly woman, attempted to imitate Xishi’s melancholic beauty by frowning. However, it backfired on her and only made her even less pleasant to behold. Means crude imitation with ludicrous effect.
