Abel looked at Mephisto, fully aware that the demon lord would never grant him a tenth of Hellfire's authority. In truth, Abel wasn't even sure how much control Mephisto himself had over Hellfire. He only knew that the Spirit of Vengeance within the Ghost Rider must hold some level of authority over Hellfire; otherwise, it wouldn't be able to resist Mephisto's commands.
"Mephisto, how much are you actually willing to offer?"
"If you're set on Hellfire authority, I can grant you one ten-thousandth. That should be sufficient!"
"One ten-thousandth is too little. Five percent, no less."
"One-thousandth. That's my final..."
Before Mephisto could finish, Abel interrupted the haggling.
"Mephisto, five percent is my bottom line. If you don't agree, I'll give the San Venganza contract to the Ancient One. I have a feeling the Vishanti would be quite interested in it."
At the mention of the Vishanti, Mephisto's face showed surprise and anger. He wasn't sure how Abel even knew of the Vishanti's Trinity, but he clearly felt the weight of Abel's threat.
With Mephisto's anger, the dark clouds above churned, lightning and thunder crashing through the sky. In the flickering light, a ghostly red-skinned demon figure, bare-chested, emerged behind Mephisto, roaring at Abel in rage.
Feeling the immense pressure radiating from Mephisto, Abel took a deep breath, producing his wand. His eyes turned blue-white, crackling with electricity. As a flash of blue-white thunder lit the ruins of San Venganza, the dark clouds stirred and lightning flickered around them, revealing a surprised expression on Mephisto's face.
Asgardian magic.
This mortal mage was not only connected to the Sorcerer Supreme of Kamar-Taj but had also mastered magic from Asgard itself. He clearly was no ordinary mage.
The phantom behind Mephisto dissipated as he reverted to his human form. "Fine, I'll give you five percent of Hellfire's authority. But in exchange, I expect the genuine, undamaged San Venganza contract."
As Mephisto spoke, a grand scroll resembling aged parchment appeared before Abel.
Abel, having dispelled his magic, glanced at the ornate scroll and shook his head. "A different contract, without all these decorative patterns."
With a slight raise of his brow, Mephisto tapped his cane, transforming the scroll into a simpler contract.
"Write it in English!"
"Skip the flowery language!"
"Make the terms straightforward!"
After rejecting the contract five times, Abel finally inspected the document in front of him. He used his wand to cast a spell that allowed him to see microscopic details, ensuring the contract had no hidden loopholes. Then, he took out a single golden hair belonging to Frigga, enchanted to protect his divination against interference. This preparation, derived from Frigga's magic, would make sure Abel remained untricked.
Mephisto watched, recognizing the hair as Frigga's and realizing Abel's connection to Asgard was deeper than he'd anticipated.
After another snap of Mephisto's fingers, the contract transformed into a straightforward white paper with clear terms.
Satisfied, Abel performed his divination, confirming the contract was free of deception. With a nod, he said, "You truly are the Lord of Hell, Mephisto. When it comes to manipulating contracts, you're second to none."
"Abel Shaw, sign it, and our deal will be done. I won't trouble you further."
Abel sliced his left index finger with his wand, letting a single drop of blood fall onto the contract to seal it.
As the contract vanished in a burst of blood-red light, Abel knew their deal was complete and binding.
He then retrieved the San Venganza contract from his belongings and tossed it to Mephisto.
Knowing Abel couldn't break the agreement, Mephisto didn't bother inspecting it. Instead, he summoned a black ruby the size of an egg, which he tossed to Abel.
"There's your five percent of Hellfire authority. Our transaction is concluded!"
"Thank you for your generosity, Lord of Hell."
Mephisto gave Abel a long, hard look before his form began to fade.
As he disappeared, Abel heard Mephisto murmur, "Abel Shaw, I'll remember this. Don't give me an opportunity to return the favor."
"Don't worry. You won't get one."
With those words, Abel disappeared into a twisting vortex, clutching his Hellfire authority.
Moments later, Abel emerged on a barren mountain in the northwestern United States, where the Ancient One was already waiting.
Seeing Abel arrive, she asked, "Master Abel, did everything go smoothly?"
"Of course. I successfully acquired Hellfire's authority. Now, I'll need your assistance in isolating this power from detection and prying eyes so I can fully integrate it."
"No problem. I'll be here to guard you."
