Bab 72: First Commission

Smiling innocently, Qingchan continued to ignore the seething Xiao Dai. She had been glaring at her for the past 10 minutes at least. While it was funny, if it continued any longer it could hinder their progress or in a more important light, cause danger. So, Julong was the first to dismiss the idea of encouraging their behaviour any further.

"Can you two cut it out already? We're properly in the wastelands now. If this continues who knows what awaits us?"

Xiao Dai grumpily huffed, followed by Qingchan just giving a cheeky nod.

"Of course."

Shaking his head disappointedly, Julong began looking around the area they had recently migrated to. In the last 10 or so minutes they had already traversed a decent amount of ground. In this commission, that was going to most likely be what most of their task was - finding the Genesis Beasts in the first place.

It had been a few weeks since the last report of their location, which was when the commission was put on the commission board. Obviously, this meant that they, for a better lack of terms, had absolutely no clue where these Genesis Beasts were.

"So how do you plan to find these Genesis Beasts, oh mighty leader?"

Qingchan had come up behind his figure with Xiao Dai tailing her. She was commenting rather blatantly on how he had essentially assumed leadership of their group by choosing which commissions they were doing. It wasn't that she had an issue with this, it was just amusing to her to see him being so uncaring of seniority.

"Okay, the mocking is uncalled for, you could have just said something, but you didn't."

Qingchan crossed her arms under her bust and looked away with a pout. It was all an act, however, and Julong was the first to figure this out. Instead, he ignored her reaction and remained silent for a few moments.

"As to how we will find them, for now, all we can do is search. If we manage to find a carcass I can try something in regards to tracking its killer via Life Solarity Qi, but otherwise, we have no lead and can only leave it down to luck."

Xiao Dai deadpanned.

"Y-You're telling me, you took this commission without a way to find them!? And I thought you were insane just for taking these commissions! Better yet I've been forced to accompany you! We can't even fly because the Genesis Beasts might spot us!"

She crouched down and held her head in her hands as Julong looked at her in disbelief.

Who the hell is this person!? How is she so different!?

Qingchan rolled her eyes at the girl. Though she too had to admit that Julong was a bit ballsy doing something like that. It was one thing just going out there, but not being able to fly really hit the nail on the head.

"Well complaining isn't going to get us anywhere. We have three days before we're picked up, not killed. Remember that Xiao Dai. Realistically, as long as we survive and can rule out locations where the Genesis Beasts aren't near, this expedition won't necessarily be for nothing."

Xiao Dai looked up at her. Her eyes were shining with awe. It seemed as though despite the antics Qingchan had put her through, she really admired her. For what, Julong wasn't sure, but he was convinced it had something to do with how she acted - if Xiao Dai's repeated attempts at showing grace and composure were anything to go by.

"Come on, stand up. We're wasting time."

She nodded.

"Yeah... got it."

She slowly straightened herself. A soft smile came to Qingchans face, surprisingly, it was genuine too. Was this the part where Qingchan finally makes a proper friend aside from Julong?

Looking further, ignoring the continual theatrics of the girls that were with him, Julong managed to spot something on the horizon. It was large and grotesque. It was almost akin to Tuntun when he was in his true form - large and burly. It gave off a dangerous aura, it in fact made Julong freeze. It was different to a normal Genesis Beast, the Genesis Beats in the wastelands were much smaller and more like slightly oversized savage dogs. The Genesis Beast in front of Julong was nothing like that, it was almost like a werewolf!

What the hell is that thing!?

Before anything more could run through Julongs mind, the ground trembled as what Julong assumed was a Genesis Beast roared. Like something in the ground was getting closer, the trembling became stronger, almost causing the small group to lose balance.

"Watch out!"

Out of the ground burst a powerful undulation of Genesis Qi. As it did, a wall of incredible magnitude and power erupted from the ground like an explosion. This was one of the main features of the wastelands, and the namesake of the place they were in. It was of course one of the Fortressing Walls, otherwise known as a Fortressing Event.

Unluckily, the small group of three were stuck on the other side of the wall to the beast, cutting off Julong's vision of the burly giant. Of course, it was happening right as Julong managed to get some sort of lead. It was just his luck.

However, though it was disappointing, Julong was angrier than anything else.

The Genesis Beast wasn't roaring aggressively, it knew that the wall was about to burst out of the ground around them, hence why it didn't bother to run away from them, nor attack them.

No, it was a mocking and amused roar...

That bastard was laughing at them!

The power from the wall managed to blast them away, thankfully all in a group. But it wasn't to say that the reason they were blasted away was just that the wall was a surprise to them. The wall which was made from the Genesis Qi from the earth and the large skeleton - which they were surprisingly close to, was incredibly strong. Not only that, but it was also incredibly pure. It was strong enough to rival a Divine-Dwelling Expert, and Julong was certain it would have been stronger in the past. It only served to make Julong question how the town survived without the walls inscribed with Grade-6 Genesis Runes. They had only been put up thanks to the Genesis Beasts after all.

Despite the Genesis Qi being strong, just like Xiao Dai had mentioned before, it was not quite as strong as the Cangxuan Sect's Inner Mountains. So on top of it being dangerous, cultivating out in the wastelands just wasn't even worth it. It was unfortunate because Julong was hoping that the clashing Genesis Qi's would allow him to achieve a Perfect Breakthrough when they finally started their commission, but he was wrong.

When the dust from the explosion finally settled, a large majestic wall was standing there. Before they could even take in its full glory though, it began collapsing. As it collapsed the world behind it became visible once again, revealing a vast empty wasteland, which was more importantly devoid of the Genesis Beast Julong had previously spotted.
