Once Mary was situated in her chair, Sara took a piece of cornbread and removed the burned part. She pinched into pieces easy for Mary to grab and put in her own mouth. Sara found that having Mary feed herself to some degree was a relief.
A piece of unburned potato was put before Mary. Sara decided to avoid giving her the so-called meat. Even her own stomach had turned at the sight of it.
She buttered her piece of cornbread and bit into. Chewing slowly, she noticed Edith watching her. The older woman’s eyes moved down. Sara paused as she ate. So far, only her and Roy knew of the baby. She had asked that he not tell anyone yet. She was only two months along and wanted to wait until she knew for sure she would carry it and also because she had no desire for the knowing looks she knew his mother would give. Now that knowing gaze was on her. Maybe it wasn’t so much of a secret now.
