The sound of a door closing rang through the house. Sara released the breath she had been holding. Everyone was gone finally. Saturday morning had dawned with a bright blue sky. Sara had waited for her mother to leave for work. She seemed to have taken forever to get ready and leave the house.
Sara had been avoiding her mother for several days. The older woman had kicked Tom out of the house two weeks earlier, but four days earlier she had announced that he was coming back once he finished visiting his sister down in Nashville. Sara’s stomach had rolled at the news. Why couldn’t he stay gone? Didn’t her mother understand what he had done?
Pushing the depressing thoughts aside, Sara opened her door and made her way down the stairs to the kitchen. She took a biscuit leftover from dinner and took it out onto the porch to wait on Roy. He had promised to pick her up for a special surprise.
