Bab 33: Learning Runes

***BRIAR'S POV***

The day that Addie had so accurately guessed that I was a werewolf, I was adding more to her training. Up until this point, I had been doing nothing more than showing her the garden and making sure that she was familiar with everything that it had to offer. There were a lot of different ingredients in there that had a lot of different qualities. However, she was learning them at an alarming rate.

Addie was obviously an intelligent girl, and I knew that she would not only retain the information that I taught her, but she would understand it and make use of it. She was fully capable of applying the knowledge that she was gaining and using it in real world applications. That alone was hard for many people.

Some of them studied for years at Lunestra Academy and could never figure out half of what I knew Addie was going to be capable of. I was right to choose her to be my successor. Especially since she would never be allowed to enroll at the Academy. I was going to take all of my knowledge from my days as an instructor and teach it to her. That was currently my life's goal.

To think that I would find a new purpose in life in a young, unique girl that I found living in a poor human village. This was obviously the best boon that there was for me. I would always and forever be thankful that I met her.

Today, I was going to add runes to Addie's lessons. I knew that she was curious about them since she had two of them on her body that intrigued her for years. She had asked me about them the night that we first met and I know that she had been waiting, not so patiently, for me to get to this part of her training.

"Addie, do you know what this is?" I asked her as I held up a thick book filled cover to cover with runes and their explanations.

"Well, I am guessing the answer is something a little more intricate than just a book." She giggled as she spoke sarcastically. "But if I had to fathom a guess, I would say that it's a book that has to do with some form of magic, based on the markings on the cover."

"That is absolutely right. But, how in the world did you know that." I was so confused that I actually tilted my head in shock and squinted my eyes at her.

"I saw something like them in a book once." It was impossible that she had ever read a book about runes or magic. There was no way that she would have met someone with a rune dictionary. They were only owned by those that possessed a high amount of status or mana. Those that attended the academy could get them as textbooks, and any high ranking official was expected to keep one in their library at all times. This book here used to be one that I taught out of back in my noble days in the city.

"You saw them in a book? Which one?"

"O..oh, uhm, d..did I say a b..book. HAHA. S..sorry, I was wrong. I..I..I meant th..th..that I saw them in a d..dream. Yeah, a dream. That was where it was." She was scared and nervous now, it was like she was trying to backpedal and make it so that she had never said the word book at all.

"Sometimes I really don't know what to think about you." I told her honestly as I set the book on the table between us. "You speak of books that you have read that you should have had no opportunity to even see. Just what in the world is this secret you are hiding from me, Addie?"

"I..I..I can't tell you that." I could tell that she was afraid to tell me, too fearful of what my reaction would be.

"Don't worry, I am not going to make you tell me, but I am curious. Some of the things you say make no sense. Especially when compared to how things are in this village." I gave her a very serious look as I watched her every move.

"I..I could say the same thing about you, Briar." She had me there. We were both hiding something from the other person that we didn't want them to know just yet.

"Well, let's make a deal to tell each other our secrets when we trust the other person explicitly. Does that sound like a good deal to you?" My hand was stretched out toward her, waiting for her to take it and shake it in agreement.

"Deal." She smiled at me and shook my hand as she agreed to tell me when she trusted me fully.

"Now, let us move on."

I flipped the book open to the first rune. It was the rune of earth and was vaguely shaped like a tree only it was made out of thin black lines.

"This rune here is the first that comes up in all the runic dictionaries. What does it mean to you, Addie?" I wanted to see what she thought of it before I explained it. The book itself was written in the ancient language of wolves and therefore not something that humans could understand.

"Well, it clearly says earth, but to me the rune looks like a tree. So, I am guessing it has to do with nature oriented magics." Her voice was so calm and even when she spoke. However, I was flabbergasted that she had actually read what the words said.

"You can read this?" She could tell that I was beyond shocked by her answer.

"Oh, uhm, is that a bad thing?" Despite everything, I just laughed at her response. She had the audacity to seem nervous only after answering my question. There was nothing else I could do but laugh and that just seemed to confuse her even more. She was such an oddity that I needed to know more about her.
